N4 Sounding off

Due to the fact that I cannot afford to purchase a new computer everytime
some game maker sets new minimum standards. I presently own a PII 450mhz
128MB 100mhz SDRAM, TNT 16MB video card, and an SB Live sound card. This
system is less then 2 years old, but for everything I have in it, it works
just fine...Not any framerate problems at least. My only complaint is that
it seems that the *** industry is pushing the envelope to see how much
more $MONEY$ they can get from US, the buyers? Example, 1.6 GB machines with
64MB of video. US, the buyers, will continue to purchase the new games, but
will we support the upgrading of the machines needed to play these games
every month? Sure you will. Not me anymore. I cannot afford to.
I have owned EVERY Papyrus racing sim, including N4( which I am totally
pissed off with Papyrus for not giving the simmer what they said they would
give us), first. A game that EVERYONE can play on there
machine....WRONG...This game came out with more bugs then the total amount
found in Florida in the summer time. All of these bugs..Yes I said bugs, for
those of you to lame to realize that the wool has been pulled down over your
eyes by Papyrus. They call it getting the game on the market as soon as
possible with No regard to US, the buyers. How much longer will you follow
that bone that the *** industry is holding in front of you??? I guess if
you want to play THAT game then go right ahead. I for one will not. This
patch is a joke.
I am very happy with N3 and will continue to play this sim for as long as I
can.
Realism, in N4...Go to Daytona or for that matter any Nascar track that lets
you operate a real Nascar car and take one for a spin. The first thing you
will notice is that there is little (if any at all) pull to the left. And
this is the realism of the whole thing....So those of you that keep spouting
off about the "realism of pulling to the left..well..." it's just not true.
I am a long time friend of Greg Biffle's Crew Chief, and in His own words
after trying to race N4, "what is this pulling to the left all about? Yes
there is some in a real Nascar car, but it is so minimal that the driver has
to make little or no adjustments for it, at all."
This just my .02 cents worth, nothing more.
Please refrain from spamming me for what I believe.

Just another Nascar simmer looking for that pot of Gold at the end of the
rainbow.....
Keep your front window clean and your rear mirror full....

Hi Frank,

<snip>
<snip>

When N4 came out I had a PIII500 with a V3 card, and even that system
was too slow to play N4. Well I could run it in 640 x 480 with most
details off, but in a Nascar game I want to drive with all 43 cars on
the road and even with gfx details at least set to medium.
So I upgraded to a PIII866 GFII GTS and now N4 runs very good, even
with 43 AI cars.
I can't say for sure if N4 is such a cpu killer because of it's
advanced physics or because of bad programming, but fact is  that if
you want to keep playing the latest games/sims, you will have to
upgrade your system quite often.
New hardware appears, programmers make use of the new hardware, you
have to buy the new hardware. Expect some runs-only-on-a-GFIII games
soon..

I can't remember them saying that, and I can't imagine they did.
You didn't really expect N4 to run properly on your PII did you?
If you did, well, that was a bit naive.. with all respect.

We allready had this discussion last week, but I don't think the
number of bugs was THAT big. The only real bug that annoyed me was the
bad AI, imho they should have waited with the release of N4 untill
they solved most of the AI problems like they did with the patch.
It's not as bad as for example F1RC which has totally unplayable AI
and a very bad multiplayer, and we're STILL waiting for a patch
(Bernie is playing F1RC with the patch right now and testing it, we
have to wait untill he thinks the patch is ok).

Again, too soon released games and patches are part of the ***
industry, accept it OR wait when a game is released, and read the
reviews and forums to see if it needs a patch, and don't buy it untill
a working patch is released.

That's ok ofcourse, but you're missing out on a beauty here, I played
N3 after I played N4 and N3 looks like such an outdated game now.. not
because of the graphics, but because of it's simplified physics model.

Is there even an online community for N3 now that most Nascar fans
upgraded to N4?

Interesting point. First of all the pull to the left is
setup-dependant, that could explain the discussions if real life
Nascar does or does not have the pull to the left.
But some of the beta testers are real life Nascar drivers, Dale Jr for
example, and I vaguely remember from an interview that Kaemmer also
drove a stockcar to see how the view from inside a stockcar is like.

To me, a total Nascar rookie, it seems logical that a Nascar pulls to
the left on a straight to that it turns better in the corner, when I
played N4 the first time the pulling immediately feeled natural.

Same goes for me :)

WOW! I have a suggestion. Return the game and live in a cave. I'm going to
upgrade next month. Do I have to? No, but I would like to play Nascar4 at
it's full potential because I think the game deserves it (it's that good,
pre and post patch). As for the pull to the left problem.........it's
realistic and all Nascar drivers deal with it. Is it that bad? Not for them,
they can adjust the steering wheel to get rid of it, we can't, that's why
it's so pronounced on our computers. On my system the pull to the left
accounts for me having the turn the wheel to the right about...........5-8
degrees at the most. Oooooo, now that's bad.....not. After racing the game
for awhile, I've gotten used to it and don't really notice it anymore. The
computer market makes itself obsolete about every 8 months. If you don't
want to keep up with it then that's your decision but you'll be left behind
very quickly and then you'll be upset. Oh, you already are, time for an
upgrade!

And you feel that Papyrus owes you for what? They have an excellent return policy for unsatisfied customers. Not flaming you, just curious as to why you think Papy need to conform to your standards.

live with it.

Frank, while I can respect your opinions, I think you are missing on a few
things.

It is not the *** industry that is doing it, actually it is no one that
is doing it.  It is the evolution of computers.  Someone comes out with a
card that all of a sudden has all of these better graphics.  Of course a
*** company is going to take advantage of those.  If they didn't we would
all still be playing games that looked like Pole Position.

Upgrading is part of computers... you either have to accept it or stay with
what you have and not worry about playing any of the new games.

I

I am glad that you still have a game that you an enjoy.  I actually still
enjoy N3 and I am in some N3 leagues as well as a N4 league.

true.

The pull is VERY setup dependant.  I have some setups where there is no pull
and I have others that have alot.  Go back and ask your friend if he could
make the car pull like that if he wanted to and he will tell you "yes".  He
will also tell you he can take the pull out if he wants.  Same thing with
N4.   Btw, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Kevin Harvick both Beta Tested for N4 and
they both said it was realistic.    Do you honestly think that both N4 and
NH would have the pull in there if it was not realistic?  Do you think that
is just some bug doing that in both games?

One thing I can thank *** for , primarily Papy sims, is getting me
motivated to learn how to build my own system, and upgrage my own components
on my schedule rather than buying a complete new system every couple of
years. I save quite a bit of money this way, and get things as I can afford
them. I also buy wisely, and get as much bang for my buck as I can.
I have been and am running N4 on the folowing:

Abit BH6 mb
GeForce2 MX vid card
256 mb pc133 ram
SB Live value soundcard.

I bought the Abit mb a couple of years ago for about 110 bucks. Originally
equipped it with a Celeron 300a running at 450 mhz, about 90 bucks. Upgraded
to the GeForce2 MX card about 6 months ago, 120 bucks open box at Best Buy.
Retired my 300a and replaced it with a Celeron 566 running at 850 for about
90 bucks about 7-8 months ago. And fairly soon, when the price is right, I
will probably drop a P3 850 or better in it, and then get a new mb about a
year down the road.

Anyways, I know building your own system is not for everyone, and I would
have thought it would not have been for me, but after doing it I wouldn't
have it any other way.

My two son's PIII500 with V3 cards use 800x600 with 20 cars drawn and 50%
draw ahead. Smooth. You should have gotten better then 640x480......
