Steering wheel buttons in Sports Car GT with v.1.551 Patch

I have installed the v.1.551 patch to SCGT.  The readme file says
"Joystick/wheel now reads up to 16 buttons".  I am still unable to change the
shift to the buttons from the stick shifter or even reverse the positions of
the stick shifter.  I have the Thrustmaster Nascar Pro Wheel.

Any help would be appreciated,
