K6 vs iPII in auto sims

by Jerry » Fri, 22 May 1998 04:00:00

I have done some testing on three different systems and have the fps listed
below. The AMD K6 can beat the PII in some games and in others it falls behind.
Here are the systems:

Note all tested with Win95 OSR/2 and Direct X 5.0
PII 233 with Shuttle 440LX chipset and 64MB SDRam and S3 Virge DX with 2MB

K6-233 with MTech 430TX chipset, 512K cache and 64MB SDRam and ET6000 2.25 MB

K5-166 with MTech 430VX chipset, 512K cache and 48MB EDO Ram and S3 Trio64 2MB

First test was Monster Truck Madness 2 demo, The Virge DX with only 2MB
wouldn't go to full screen at 640 x 480 with Direct 3D so software mode was
tested on all machines.

320 x 400 complex scenery, no tracks, no smoke, no dashboard, and normal image
quality for all machines.
All scores are in Frames per second
(Clear)
PII 233 - 20
K6233 - 15
K5-166 - 10

(Clear) by the barn, or truck passing
PII233 - 17
K6233 - 13
K5-166 - 9

(Rain)
PII233 - 19
K6233 - 16
K5-166 - 10

(Rain) with train passing
PII233 - 18
K6233 - 15
K5-166 - 9

640 x 480 complex scenery, no tracks, no smoke, no dashboard, and normal image
quality for all machines.
All scores are in Frames per second
(Rain)
PII233 - 13
K6233 - 11
K5-166 - 7

The K6 -233 and MB costs $220 while the same PII 233 and MB costs $360.  The
$140 difference would allow me to get a 3DFX card.  My K6 system also has 3DFX
(voodoo 1) card and can run 25 FPS with all graphic options on, fog, lens
flare, etc, at 640 x 480.

Grand Prix 2 by Microprose ran in MS-DOS mode
K5 wasn't tested here although it can run at 23 fps with sky off at 320 x 200
and never exceed 100% occupancy.
320 x 200 both can run at 25.6 fps with all options on.

640 x 480 all options on, full mirrors,  sky, and all objects.
The recommended rate from program for PII was 17 although the K6 system said
that 25.6 was recommended.

Occupancy in %
frame rate set at 25.6
Starting grid at San Marino

PII233 -  210
K6233 - 180

frame rate set at 17
PII 233 - 140
K6233 - 120

Sky removed from settings
In car view of computer controlled car one full lap

PII233 set at 18.2 fps
CPU Occupancy 64 to 114 highest when passing grandstands

K6233 set at 21.3 fps
CPU Occupancy 66 to 116 highest when passing grandstands

K6 beats the PII by 3 fps

SODA Off Road by Papyrus

640 x 480 max detail with only sky texture set to suto

PII 233 with auto sky texture set to min 20 fps and max 24 fps

sky textured most of the time so game gets back to 24 but also drops below 20
in some places when racing with 5 AI trucks..

K6233 with auto sky texture set to min 9 fps and max 12 fps

sky textured most of the time so game gets back to 12 but also drops below 9 in
some places when racing with 5 AI trucks..

The only explaination I have is the infamous Pentium floating point comes into
play.

SODA only supports Rendition 3D so software mode was used.

Intel PII with 440LX mb is the best performer on all but a few games I have.
The only problem with this is the cost.  A 3Dfx card, K6-233 and 430TX mb cost
the same.  Since most games are either Direct 3D or 3DFX I think the choice is
clear.  If you have an extra $150 get the PII.  The games I tested were ran
without any 3D acceleration so raw CPU performance was tested.  I got tired of
seeing just Quake benchmarks :)

P.s. any Celery chip guys have these games.
