D3D on GPL

D3D on GPL

I haven't played GPL in a long time.  I used to have a voodoo3 and
450mhz PII.  I recently got a DELL inspiron 8000 with a 850MHz chip.  It
has an ATI M4 32mb card.  I thought it wasn't going to work well.  So I
loaded it up, ran 640 with software and got 30+ frames per second.  Then
while looking around I found the new D3D drivers.  I got 1280 with no
problems and 32 frames per second.  (most graphics turned on but mirrors
and sky)  I'm SOOOOO happy since their opengl patches didn't work very
well.  (though i'd be happier with 30+ and all the graphics turned on)

cheers,

That sounds like a pretty good system, Chris, wouldn't it be better to run
lower resolution (say, 1024 x 760) and turn on all graphic details?  That's
what I have done with a desktop Dell PIII 850 and an old Voodoo 3 3000 on a
17 inch monitor, and get over 30 fps except right at the start of a race
with 19 cars.  Or is D3D just that much slower?  Genuine question, I'm not
taking the piss.

Do you find the higher resolution looks much better on the LCD screen?  I've
got an Inspiron 5000e at work -- how do you drive with the laptop, do you
have a USB wheel?

Yes, I have a logitech FF wheel.  It works really well in GPL I think.
Personally, I like the higher resolution.  At first i did 1024x768 and
got 30+ with everything turned on. I just don't care about detail in
mirror and about smoke, dirt, anti-aliasing and stuff like that.  Don't
get me wrong, you have to turn all the track objects and crowds on.  So
i went to a higher resolution.  For races with other cars I might go
back to a lower res.

I wish laptops had a game port.  I've been designing a cool wheel/pedal
kit for a couple years now.  one that folds and is small enough to
travel with.  Just haven't had time or money to finish it.  The 5000e
would do ok but it isn't a full 32mb video card.  Other problem with
laptops, you have to reach around the wheel to get to the keyboard.

cheers,

chris
