TOCA framerate on a Cyrix ??

TOCA framerate on a Cyrix ??

by Lars Wolfgang Anders » Sun, 28 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I just purchased TOCA and although I am more of a *** simmer I
must say I enjoy this one. Although it took me awhile to get the hang
of it (and some of it's faults).

IMO the unlocking the tracks bit is utterly crappy. And the lack of
damage influencing your car ????   <sigh>.
And btw isn't the steering a bit too sensitive ??   Even with my GP1
wheel I can have a hard time on the lowest of sensitivity settings.

But now I've got it ... and I have to admit ... I like it!   :-)

But on my system  Cyrix 166+  and a Orchid Rigteous it doesnt exactly
fly !!  :-(

Even though I play with lowest detail options, it get to be a bit
choppy especially when in traffic. And that usually means certain
spins as it is harder to correct a spin. (for me it is anyway :-) )

And I have the new ver 3. Orchid drivers and the hardware option
enabled in DirectX.

Therefore framerate=very important for me.

How does it compare on an Intel machine ?

Is there anyone with a good suggestion for upgrades ?

Thank you & best regards

Lars

Hi,

I had the same problems as you with a Cyrix P150+ (overclocked to
166), Righteous 3d, and 32mb of RAM. I upgraded to a P166MMX which I'm
running at 188mhz (75mhz*2.5) and it runs high res, very high detail
with no slowdown, even in traffic. Steering response with my GP1 also
improved. This upgrade cost me less than 200. I've got an A-bit TX5
jumperless motherboard to go with the chip, and you might even get a
166MMX to run at 215mhz. Check www.tomshardware.com for info about
overclocking.

TOCA framerate on a Cyrix ??

TOCA does not like Cyrix chips. I've tried it on three almost identical
systems : my 6x86L-200, K6-200 and a Intel 200MMX all equipped with 3dfx
cards.

It was almost unplayable on the cyrix (even when overclocked to 166Mhz)-
when in heavy traffic or passing the pits complex the frame rate would
crawl - down to about 5/6fps.
The AMD K6 was a lot better than the cyrix, but slowdown was still
noticeable.
The Intel chip shows now difference at all and could be run at max detail
in high res with no slowdown apparent at all.

So as far as I can gather framerate in TOCA is very dependant on floating
point performance. If you have a Cyrix (any type) even with a 3dfx card
do not buy TOCA - get a playstaion or an Intel chip.
