Can I run N2002 with this setup?

by max » Tue, 26 Feb 2002 01:32:49

I'm trying to decide whether to buy N2002.... My system currently:
850 Tbird (not o/c)
MSI K7T-Pro2A w/ 133 chipset
Win98SE
512 meg of PC133 memory
Voodoo3 PCI w/ 16meg
N4 ran good on the Voodoo but I'm considering a Visiontek Geforce3 Ti200
64meg. Question is: Will N2002 run well on my system if I get the
Geforce? Or am I wasting my time (and money) trying to boost a system
with 850mhz processor.

TIA

Can I run N2002 with this setup?

Max,

I have a p3 850 running a geforce 2 mx 32meg (hercules Prophet2) which was
before the mx200 mx400 were introduced.  I run the game IMHO pretty well,
not to much eye candy on, most sliders on medium, though enough to pick my
brake points and you know.  Getting solid 35-45 fps most of the time Online.
However, I admit, that I wanted to take a screenshot for website, of my new
car, but, I thought it just didnt do the paint job justice... I think you
would find it to be acceptable for racing...  seems how you enjoyed n4 in
about the same deficiency (with the voodoo3 card).

here is my specs
850 p3
256 m ram
aureal vortex 2 < this could be a problem I will find out shortly as I find
a new card to try...  I hear it is a resource hogger...  my max sounds are
BTW set to 8.

I have the voodoo5500 but it is in wife's computer, which except being a 700
p3 everything else is nearly identical, and the kids play on it...  most the
games are GLIDE they want anyway.  n4 was similar FPS on it as on my
machine, for n4 that is, I haven't tried 2k2 on it.

I think the better card would be better, and I am looking at the same card.
found OEM version for 145 or so on pricewatch.com

Thanks for the info plowboy, I think I'll go ahead and try it. The local BestBuy
has the Geforce3 ti200 for 179-30 rebate=149.  They also have N2002 for
39.99-5.00 rebate=34.99 so I should be able to do all this for under 200.

MAX, do me a favor or 2.

Tell me your Frame rate in N4 with your current setup (average) and you find
it playable right?  My bud has similar setup, voodoo3 and all, but has
elected to not move from n3 and I want to know if he's just having driver
trouble or something and needs to tweak something for n4.  It just hurts to
race him in N3 ya know after being in n4 and now 2002.

Then it would be cool to see if your system will run 2002 at all with the
voo3 card. before you remove the darn thing that is.  I'm trying to get him
to buy my herc geforce so I can move up a notch, it will save him some
dough, and help me out to

thanks

While the processor is on the bottom edge of acceptable, the only major weak
link I see is your video card. I would suggest upgrading that alone and
you'd likely be ok to run 2002. It may not be silky smooth, but with a newer
vid car should be every bit as playable as N4 was to you. I use a Visiontek
GF3 on my racing machine and it does just fine. AMD 1.2Ghz with 512MB PC 133
RAM, decent graphics (no anisotropic filtering or steering wheel) and I
maintain 50-60 FPS in most all situations but the worst online pileups. Even
then 40 is as low as I have seen it.

Plowboy,

My average rate for N4 with the voodoo was around 18fps in traffic and 25fps
alone with settings in the middle range at Daytona. I had today off so I took
the family to BestBuy and picked up a Geforce3. I didnt get N2002 yet as the
wife looked at me sideways when I said I wanted to get the Geforce. So I pulled
the voodoo this afternoon and installed the Geforce. I havent had a chance to
check it all out yet but I'll let you know how the Geforce does with N4. As far
as the voodoo framerates from N3 to N4 are concerned I dont remember exactly
what I was getting with N3  but I know that running N4 probably dropped my fps
by at least 25-30%.

Can I run N2002 with this setup?

CarGuy,

I installed the Geforce but are there any settings (like no anisotropic
filtering) that I need to specify in the settings to get the best performance?
Also I've seen alot of posts on drivers,  which one do you run and where did you
get it.

Thx
Max

Yes, I run without the wheel on and anisotropic filtering disabled in the
game, I also recommend you turn off the skid marks. They're FPS hogs that
you really don't need in order to enjoy the sim. I run 1024x768 rez and 16
bit color. I am using Win XP Pro and the 23.11 drivers for the card itself.
