Struggling to another 8:30 practice lap at the Ring [ignores
snorts], I was wondering if the real racers had to run a full
outlap before going on their timed lap, too.

Or did they have tricks like at Pescara?  I can imagine using the
loop of the Sudschleife to return from the straight behind the
pits to just in front of the start/finish line.

Anyone?

In real life, the tire walls that are modelled in GPL right after the
chicane before the start/finish line and at the end of the straight behind
the pits was opened to allow the cars to warm up.

It would be nice if we could do this in GPL.  Maybe one of the track editors
could remove the tire walls.  This could be a problem for people cheating
but it would seen on replays.

They usually did more than one of these laps to warm the tyres. At least
the crowd there has something to see then.

Its not a problem of removing the walls, but a problem of allowing cars to
cut from one section of the track to another. And that's likely to be
impossible, due to the way GPL's tracks are defined.
You CAN however move your pitstall in GPL to another part of the track,
that allows you to have an outlap of about 2 minutes (to warm up the tyres)
and then you start your flying lap. Saves you 7 from the 9-minutes outlap.

Okay, after the left hander behind the pits, go right and go right again on
to the finish straight, right?  That _is_ the Sudschleife's loop.  Unless I
misunderstood you, Bruce.

Here is the past post that explained how to move the pits at the Ring. Don

Add these lines to the Nurburg\Track.ini to replace the existing ones.
The first part is to let AI's speed up as soon as they cross s/f, otherwise
their first full (timed) lap is done in "out-lap" pace which is ~9:30, even
for Clark.
The second part defines the place of the pitstalls. The distances ("18030")
is the distance from s/f, these values give boxes before the 2nd Karusell.
If you want them anywhere else, experiment a little. The "-4.3" defines the
lateral distance from the center of the track. You don't want the cars to
be in the middle of the track, nor outside the fences :-)
This is halfway ON the track, half on the grass. Works OK.

Ofcourse you can do this on every track, but it's nowhere as useful as on
the Ring.

No, they used the loop around the back of the pits to warm up on and then
start a practise lap.
