P133 & 3dfx for N99, worth buying?

by John Linderma » Mon, 28 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I'm currently running a P133 with a Diamond Rendition S220 3d video card
with Nascar2.  I can buy a new 1st generation Canopus Pure3d 3dfx card
for about $50.  I'm considering buying one & also Nascar99.  Does anyone
think it is worth it?  Will the 3dfx board give me better performance
than my Rendition board (in either N2 or Nascar99)?  I haven't been
overly thrilled with my Rendition board.  It helped smooth out the
performance in N2 some, but didn't allow for much increase in "eye
candy".  I can't afford a CPU upgrade, so I wanted to know if the
addition of a 1st generation 3dfx card would be worth it.  Any other
suggestions on racing games or sims for my aging P133 & a possible 1st
generation 3dfx board would be appreciated. (I already own ICR2, Soda, &
NFS SE).
Thanks

First thing first- the Voodoo will NOT run N2 or NR1999 any better than the
V2100. I have both in my system, and the Rendition version is better in both
cases.
Still, I would recommend a 3Dfx card of some description- there are too many
titles that run great under Glide.

As far as a racing title for a 133/V1 combo....have you tried Burnout? I
don't have the system requirements here in front of me, but it may do OK on
your system(with the 3Dfx card). Also, look for Rally Championship from
***- a lot of fun for the money.

Assuming you're using your Stealth S220 in Rendition DMA mode
(renddma), I don't think a Voodoo1 will help much.  The biggest
problem is your CPU.  You could probably get a P233MMX for about $100,
the cost of the V1 + NR99, assuming you could plug it directly into
your current motherboard.  That would give you a big boost.

I'm not sure if there is a DOS version of the 3Dfx executable in
NR99, and word is that the Windows versions are noticably slower,
particularly on slower machines.

If you get the 3Dfx, others have praised F1RS and MGPRS on slower
machines.

nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

I do not reccommend running a 3Dfx card on less than a P233.  (or P200 MMX).
This will eat a lot of memory.  Right now, I have a P200 MMX with a SiS
Video chip.  I have nothing with 3D anywhere.  Mine runs great.  I think
that your current 3D card will be fine.  A lot could have to do with your
monitor.  I would reccommend a 17" (minimum) with no less than an 800x600
resolution.  I like 1024x768.  Also, if your hardware and monitor will
tolerate it, install UNIVBE.

I have Burnout, and it runs fine on my old P100 with Monster 3D.

I have a Gateway 2000 Pentium Pro 225, with 64 Megs of Ram, 17" monitor,
and the Diamond Monster Fusion Card (Voodoo Banshee 16MB).  I am running
the 3dfx reference drivers.  And Nascar RAcing 1999 Edition runs great
on my computer in 3dfx mode, even through windows.

Actually, my professional recommendation would be that you SHOULD use a
Voodoo 1 on a machine of P2-300 or less, and a Voodoo2 for P2-350 and up
(unless you've got the cash for a V2 NOW).  The V2's a better board, but
can't live up to it's potential until it gets into the highest end
(currently).  Tom's Hardware backs that recommendation.  A voodoo1 will
SIGNIFICANTLY extend the useful lifespan of a "slower" computer.

How, pray tell, will a 3Dfx card "eat a lot of memory?"  My Canopus has
6MB onboard, are you saying 3Dfx uses system memory?

Jumping in late here, so maybe misconstruing the top editied post.  But my own
experience:

I (still) have a V1 (Pure 3D).  It was an IMMENSE improvement on my P133.  I

I was starting now, I'd just get the V2, or maybe Banshee.  So it might not
give much of an improvement compared to a V1 on a P133.  I suspect it will
give at least some.  And you won't feel the need to upgrade in the next few
months if/when you upgrade the CPU.

As to the "memory" comment, it's got me.

As to N99, I imagine it can be run acceptably with reduced # of cars and
reduced graphics.  I'm running full graphics and 39 cars and estimate 15 to
low 20's fps on my "250".
