GPL and Geforce - fixing stutter!

by g.. » Fri, 02 Nov 2001 16:18:57

I'm tearing my hair out trying to get gpl to work consistently with my
new system.

Specs: Athlon 1.4G on MSI6330Lite Mobo (Via), 512 mb ram, SBLive
Value, and Asus AGP-7700 Geforce2 Deluxe 64MB. With USB modem and USB
LWFF.

I've stuffed around trying all the different Geforce drivers, and for
a while it seemed to work with the 6.31c drivers from Asus that came
with the card. The nvidia 12.41 drivers gave me better scores in
3dmarkpro 2000 and 2001, but gpl had terrible stutter.

Now I can't fix the stutter - it's OK for 2-3 laps, then gets
progressively worse.  I thought it might have been overheating, but
I've opened the case and have a huge fan blowing in there, and the
temp, according to hardware monitor, is steady on about 53 degrees.
(Previously it had got up to about 65 degrees and still worked OK in
other games, eg N4).

I've set virtual memory to 1024 min and max as described elsewhere.

I've installed (about 100 times it seems!) the via 4 in 1 version 435
drivers.

I've also searched in vain for a website describing how to get d3d
working with gpl and/or the idiosyncracies of Geforce2 drivers etc.

Can anyone suggest where I might find a comprehensive guide to sorting
this out? Or has anyone else got a similar system that they have got
to work and can tell me what to do?

(Possibly relevant is the fact the system "seemed" to be OK with the
Asus 6.31c drivers but then I installed the Max Payne demo, and to get
that to work I had to install the Nvidia 12.41 drivers, then I lost my
sound - the system kept giving the soundblaster card IRQ 255! - and it
took me about 5 hours of uninstalling and reinstalling all sorts of
things until finally, for some reason which I have no idea of, the
sound worked again! I've unintalled Max Payne, reinstalled the 6.31c
drivers, but ***y gpl still stutters.)

Anyway, I'll be very grateful to anyone that can point me in the right
direction.

TIA
Alan.

I have a similar system as yours, Athlon 1.33G on Asus A7M266, SB Live DE
and Asus V7700 GF2 GTS 64mb, USB LWFF. I use the Asus 12.90 drivers and have
no problems with stutter at all. 36fps solid. I use the d3d patch from Papy
and all works fine.

Check out your sound drivers, do you have a internal sound card aswell -
disabled?

I had a problem with basically the same system except I had a Guillemot
Fortissimo soundcard.  I had stutters of about 1/2-1 second sometimes and
with other drivers just constant delays.  What i did (I know this is weird)
is install drivers for the onboard sound - i may or may not have removed my
old card and enabled it.

I also installed the SB Live fix from the Via site - its meant to get rid of
popping on some Kt133(a) boards with certain PCI sound cards.

It was a weird one, but its working great now.

I hope this helps
Ash

GPL and Geforce - fixing stutter!

Hi Alan,

could you see whether the harddisk is being accessed when the stutters
occur? It could simply be some system service running in the background.
Under WinME, I've seen the STMGR doing this often, and I assume under XP
this could happen as well?

Thanks Sid and Ashley.
I think something worked - not sure what exactly! Touch wood.

Sometimes I suspect it is the order in which things are installed
makes a difference, because I have basically just reinstalled
everything again, and now it seems to be working.

Anyway, I'm just hoping it keeps working!

Thanks again
Alan.

Alan,

You might also try unplugging your USB modem if you're not using it - last I
heard (and this was a while ago), all USB modems were WinModems, and I know
that a lot of people had GPL performance problems traced to WinModems.  At
least with a USB modem, plugging and unplugging shouldn't be too difficult -
much easier than removing an expansion card!

Best of luck!

Rick
