GP2 add on tracks help needed

by Tim Deatherag » Sat, 31 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Hey GP2 Experts....

In the past I have downloaded ( from STS and Pieter) GP2 tracks....but never
could figure oot how to install them. One of the tracks extracted as a .DAT
file ( it appears that GP2 doesn't use dat files )  and one track read-me
file said to install in the GP2\circuits directory which I do not have !

How do GP2 tracks work ? Can someone give me a lesson
in GP2 Tracks 101? Is the Indy track good ?

As always,
Tim

Tim, heres todays lesson :)

1. GP2 stores the circuit data as files called F1CT01.DAT - Interlagos,
F1CT02.DAT - Aida etc.. These files are usually only stored on the CDROM and are
not copied during a full install. They are in the GP2/CIRCUITS directory on the
CD.

2. To use tracks you will need to get a patch that modifies GP2.EXE so it will
read the tracks from the local HD instead of the CD. This is usually the
GP2NOCD.EXE program.

3. Now you need to make the CIRCUITS directory off your main GP2 directory and
copy all the DAT files from the CD. Its worth noting that there is a 200mb file
called TRACKDAT.BIN that is in the same directory. Its a bogus file and is not
used, so dont copy it,  just copy the *.DAT files.

4. Once you have done this you are pretty much set.. Now all you have to do is
install the new track by copying it into your newly created circuit directory
and deleting the circuit you wish to replace (you can copy it back from the CD)
and renaming the new track to the correct filename eg. F1CT01.DAT to replace
interlagos.

5. Some more things worth noting. You can't add tracks you can only replace
existing ones. When inside the game the circuit names and circuit pictures will
still be the same as the defaults. There is a utility that can be used to change
the circuit name and some other useful things like fuel consumption.

Oh yeh you will need to make sure you have done a large install so that all the
track objects etc are on the local HD. So if you only have done a small or
medium install, you need to reinstall GP2.

I hope this was clear enough for you.

Regards,
David

You don't need to do the above. You have to do a full install anyway
and when you do the CIRCUITS directory with the dat files will already
be there.

Don't you think it would be simpler to just rename the old file to
xxxxxx.old? Instead of deleting it and having to re-copy it from  the
cd rom?

Im afraid you are wrong here. A full installation routine will not create a
directory called circuits, nor will the installation routine copy any tracks
to HD, which ever install you choose.

Not really, no....

Then perhaps you can tell me why the circuits directory and tracks dat
files are on my HD. I never copied them over. The only reason I can
think that they are there without me copying them is because the
utility I used to make the game not read from the HD does it for you.
Which makes it better than the one you suggested using. It's simply
called nocdrom.zip.

You're one of those people who can't admit your wrong obviously.

Can you now admit that you were wrong and that you don't know what you are
talking about? All you've done is to help to confuse Tim.

Yes it would.. but who cares. Tim is probably clever enough to realise that he
could indeed do just that if he so desired.

You're correct I did another full install and the circuits directory
was not there. The nocdrom patch I have copies them over for you from
the cd. It will also set the game back to the cd version by use of
running a batch file. The patch I have is obviously a different, and
better, version than the one you guys have been using.

And please do tell, why not? It's a no win situation for you so let's
see what grandiose reason you can come up with.

It could be that you had installed either the Perfect Track Pack addon
or its demo. As far as I'm aware the nocdrom.zip only contains a
gp2.exe and setup.exe and doesn't automatically copy the tracks for you.

The other explanation is that you are using the warez version.

Well you're wrong on two counts now.

David

You obviously haven't read the next post I made after that one. There
is a patch to make GP2 run from the HD that actually copies the
circuits directory over for you. That's why I thought they were
already there. You lot have been using some inferior type of patch
that requires you to do it manually. It's was an easy mistake to make
on my part. But, that doesn't explain your ***retentive attitude.

Don't regards me you  piece of asswipe. Some of you people on this
group are the MOST snobbish bunch I've ever come across on the net.
Take the ***plug out of yer ass and learn to be more human instead
of the stuck up sub dweeblet you are.

Well, I just posted a message accusing you of being wrong when infact you are
right. I had said that the Perfect Track pack was how you got the track files.

I just downloaded the nocdrom.zip and it does indeed have all the trackfiles
included that would have been installed.

I was indeed wrong. Please accept my apologies. It was your initial assertion
that the games installation would copy the track files and your nitpicking about
renaming trackfiles that had me wound up. All I was trying to do was help Tim
the best I could.

So I'm sorry I got angry with you and accused you of being wrong when it was I
who was wrong about the nocdrom.zip

David

The version I have of nocdrom.zip contains the following files;
readme.txt, arj.exe, nocdrom.arj, nocdrom.bat, and yescdrom.bat.
Go that? And no I'm  not using a warez version Mr.
***ing-know-it-all.

And you're an ignoramus, but I digress.

I wasn't nitpicking. I was simply stating what to me seemed a simpler
method. The net doesn't allow for proper expression so let's just put
it down to that. Ignore my flames if you will. I can get harsh at
times. Sorry.

Hohoho....we were both right so there. When you apply the patch it
copies the circuits for you. No need to manually do it....hohoho.

Well... if you are not happy, you can go away. I'm sure some people would
not cry about that. Well I should too but I am a Simracer *** and a
snobbish ego-centric one also.  You just can't understand that the whole
world is make of people disagreeing with others. IMHO (probably not yours,
it's normal).
