sim racing dead? browsing for wheels at the store..

Hi all..was in a few stores (upstate NY area) yesterday. I am amazed at the
lack of wheels for pc racing. Only wheel available was the black momo. Used
to at least have your choice of a logi, ms, thrustmaster. Must be we are not
that important.

It comes and goes.  I'd say we are in a dead time right now it seems.  The
fact Act Labs has slowly been dieing for the last year or more shows that
the market just can't support a lot of producers for the mass market wheels.
Logitech pretty much has a lock on that market now  and the high end makers
like TSW, ECCI, etc get the rest.
Despite what people here might think the sim racing market is just not that
big compared to other PC markets.  Just not enough profit for the effort I
think.  Easier to make money selling console games and controllers with less
risk.

agreed..it would be nice to get a nice wheel that falls in between the two
levels. I have a tsw but would like a decent ff wheel too.  One that is of
good quality with out having to take out a loan to purchase it.

Oh well...

David,

If you already have a TSW, why not pick up that black MOMO and use it with the
TSW peds if you want FF?  Most sims now support multiple simultaneous
controllers.  I've been using my MOMO (red) along with my TSW's peds for years
now in sims like GPL, Nascar Racing ( and Heat) , F1C, LFS, NetKar, TOCA Race
Driver 2 etc.

I use the red MOMO, but only because my early model black MOMO's paddle shifter
broke after a few weeks (a problem that reportedly has been fixed in later
models).  I thought that the the wheel and FF of the black MOMO was quite good.

All you would need to do is keep your TSW hooked up to the PC, as is, and hook
up the MOMO via USB.  The only drawback is the physical space taken up by having
2 complete wheel/pedal systems hooked up to the PC at the same time.

Kind of forgot about that. I used to use the tsw pedals with my old red
logi. In fact I found a few other wheels to be decent when I tried them but
the pedals were always the weakest part of the set up. That's where the tsw
pedals would come in handy.

I tried the black momo and wasn't all that impressed. Maybe I didn't spend
enough time with it (or the settings)

happy racing..

All the stores here in Florida have several racing wheels.  Microsoft and
Act Labs are exiting the market, but they still have Logitech, Saitek, and
Thrustmaster.  There's usually 4-6 wheels at most stores I go to, looking
for games.  And that's JUST PC wheels.

I have a black Logitech Momo.  The left paddle broke after two years of
off-and-on, but heavy, use (every few months I take a break from racing
altogether and put the wheel away for a while, and maybe get out my flight
stick or gamepad, and I'm always taking the wheel off my desk a few times a
day (one of these days if I have money, I will have a dedicated racing PC).
I fixed the paddle with some ABS glue and it seems to be working just fine
(although it was a little tough to take it apart and put it back together).
For 99 dollars I consider it a very good deal.  It has a gear drive, but I
believe this system is probably far more reliable than a belt drive, even
though it will feel a little "notchy", especially when forces aren't acting
on the wheel.  The feel is also solid, unlike some of the cheaper wheels,
and the force feedback can be quite powerful (whereas the little red
Logitech FF wheel I have, has very wimpy effects).  The pedals also move
around very little and the base is nice and large- if you put down some
grippy no-slip matting, it doesn't move around at all.

I was surprised the thrustmaster was not available. They seem to always have
a wheel or two available.

I've used ECCI "tractor" pedals w. the red Logi, and TSW pedals w. the black
Momo, and the latter seems far superior to me, both in terms of FF and pedal
"feel".  You don't HAVE to connect the wheel & pedals as 2 separate devices;
you can wire them together (or, rather, I had ECCI wire the former and
Thomas Enterprises wire the latter...for a price).

Bert...did exactly what you said. With very good results. Imho my tsw does
not work to perfection in xp through the gameport or usb converter (as a
whole). The new usb wheels are probably the way to go but for now I will
stay with the momo and the tsw pedals. Hats off to papy for allowing their
sims to use these configs.

Thanks again..

You're Welcome!  Now you have the best of both worlds, relatively cheaply.
Decent FF wheel with the peds that you're already used to.

I don't know why your TSW "doesn't work to perfection" (your words) in XP,
because I have no problem with mine (an original TSW) and XP.  Perhaps the pots
need cleaning/replacing?

Best of Luck with your new set-up..

Replaced the pots not too long ago. I just think I would get better
performance out of a new tsw usb wheel.  It still is very precise but didn't
seem the same as in windows 98. Decided to give this ff wheel a try in case
I decide to send in the tsw for the conversion. Could be just my warped
imagination.

Thanks for the replies.
