There seem to be a lot of interesting - er non Nascar ;-) mods for
this one.

As Nascar Heat isn't available in the UK it is a full price sim to
get it here. Is it worth it? I know the physics have been modified
for the mods - how do they stack up for open wheeled/ sports car
sims? It is seldom mentioned on this NG.

I am aware there were some problems as a true Nascar sim with AI &
yellow flags etc. but hopefully they do not apply for the mods?

Any info appreciated.

The same limitations that apply to the Nascar portion also limit the
mods.  There are no yellows online...however, our league has a race steward
who can manually declare a yellow flag so that isn't tooo much of an issue.
The AI have been improved via patching but in offline oval running you may
still have to avoid a few extra hits during yellow laps.
The mods are as good as those who are creating them.  Currently DTM(German
Touring cars) and the Brisca Heat/Legends(short track&dirt ovals) cars have
the most online support.  There are about a dozen road courses converted
from other sources...most have inconsistancies that, while they don't kill
online racing, do make for problems if you haven't tested them fully.(i.e.
run into a wall at certain spots and you will be trapped, or drive over
small off track areas and get launched into low earth orbit)  But there are
several leagues supporting many of the mods.  The Cart Champcars are being
overhauled to improve the physics, A Can Am mod is being converted from
SCGT.
Most places around here are selling NH for about $19(US) and that, coupled
with the mods make for an excellant value.  There is talk of one final patch
being worked on but I don't know the status of that.

I have tried most of the Heat mods, and while I'm really impressed with all
the hard work that must have gone into producing them, they are of course
still based on the Heat physics engine.

IMHO, the best out right now is the GT-Mod V2.0 for F1-2001.

I don't know how involved you get into the cars etc.  But this is my NASCAR
game, I am not a mechanic so I like not having to mess with the car just race.
All the mods I have are more than acceptable to me..(again I may get as far
into it as you..)

The only other game I put any real time into is SCGT...it has LOTS of add-ons.
The new LeMans track is fabulous.

Just got Ralley Trophy...also looks good...my wife and I actually do runs
against each others time.  The first comp game we have played together since
Space Quest on the old Tandy...

Speaking of patches. You posted a link here where to get a patch that
incorporates all the Heat patches and requires no-cd for gameplay. I lost
the link because I did a format and went back to Win98 from XP. Would you
please post that url again. Thx.
