P5 v. PPro controversy ?

by John Clarke Mccanle » Thu, 15 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I'm sure this has been hashed over before but I'm still unclear:
We all know that, at a given clock rate, the PPro offers no
significant performance advantage over a P5 in executing 16-bit
code.  My question is, what about in the DOS/4GW protected mode
that nearly all games use today?  It's my understanding that the
DOS/4GW environment is fully 32-bit addressable (hence the "4G",
since 2^32 = 4Gig).  I therefore conclude that the PPro should
indeed offer better performance than the P5 when running CPU-
intensive DOS/4GW games like ICR2, NASCAR, and GP2.

Am I wrong?  It seems that every so often I see a post claiming
that PPros are worthless for DOS games, which shouldn't be true
(at least not in r.a.s.!).

Regards,

John

you are correct.
(especially if the game is svga (2.0 even better) and you run fastvid)

P5 v. PPro controversy ?

From benchmarks and personal experiences, shared to this and the flight
sim group, the P6 is the clear performance leader in the latest, DOS4GW,
sims.  This includes ICR2, NASCAR, and GP2.

I haven't heard this opinion in r.a.s recently.

I believe this issue is now settled.  If WIN95 emerges as a sim
platform, we'll have a new flurry of debate until reports come from those
of us who have P6 systems.
