Anybody try GP2 on a PPro?

by Francois Morissett » Fri, 26 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I was just wondering how the frame rate was on Gp2 since I
will be buying a new mobo. I'm trying to decide between a
PPro 200 or a P200 or just go to a P166 and wait for the MMX
stuff to come out. Thanx.

The Pentium Pro 200 would probably run GP2 slower then a Pentium 200.
This is due to the fact that the PPro's architeceture is optimized for
32-bit operation where GP2 runs under DOS(16-bit code).  In a
comparison of the two processors running 16-bit code the P200 tended
to out perform the PPro 200.

The truth is just a poor excuse for lack of imagination.

While the above is true, a program called FASTVID virtually eliminates this inherent
slowdown. We tested GP2 on a fast Dell 166 vs a Gateway P6 200 (matrox 4m, 32 ram) and
indeed the Dell was generating better frame rates.  However, after loading Fastvid the
pro200 was a good deal faster . E.g. Svga... main view - all objects, all textures except
sky on, mirrors - track, smoke only(no mirror texture)... estimated fps=>25.  Set for 18.x
gives PO of 55-65% except in very congested situations where fps=90-105%. (playback always
shows PO of 125-150% or more (?))

Now, don't go tellin' them about FASTVID...hehehe
That's "our" little secret.
A P6/200 with FASTVID on is the fastest machine out, period.
Any sim, any frame rate type game. Nothing is faster.

Except that GP2 uses Watcom's DOS/4GW DOS extender. I understand that any
DOS/4GW programs are 32 bit.

OH, thought I might mention the p6 get a score of
379 processor
606 video
on the gp2 log:on test.
What does your machine get?
Faster, I'll bet...huh?

Hmmm...  Weird...  my P180 gets a 349 on processor.  On video I'm way
under that...  34x but it's a DRAM card...

Greets,

Yves

I saw a poster say that his P5/166 gets a processor score of
something like 429. That's a smokin' machine.
