GPL: Invalid CD !?

by Johan Foedere » Tue, 16 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Hi All,

Can anyone help me solve this problem? Ever since I installed Windows98
I'm unable to install GPL. Installshield tells me I have an invalid CD.
I contacted Sierra's tech support about this and they say it's caused by
region conflicts of installshield and my Windows version. I tried
changing all language and region setting in windows, but this doesn't
make any difference. Sierra tells me there's nothing they can do the
$#&^%!

Does anyone know a solution to this problem? (Other than buying a new
Windows version) I've been unable to drive GPL for too long :-(

Thanks,
Johan

Oops,  I think I just did reply to author instead of group (Blush).  Anyway
here goes again.

I had exactly the same problem.  I discovered that if I put the CD in to my
CD Writer (instead of the CD Rom) it then installed OK.

Hope this helps.

Andrew

I had a similar problem with another program. It was caused by a CD Rom
which is too fast for the installation routines!! It may help if you install
from a slower CD Rom.

Hope this helps

Had that problem too and it can have something to do with the drivers for
w98
if you managed in w95, BUT on the other side I think it's the CD station it
can't
handle those oversized CD's like GPL either because it's to old or is bad
quality.
For me I found out that Papyrus or Sierra had put some enormous sized files
in the
surface dir to really fill up the CD and in that way make it harder to do
pirate copies.
That's ok from their point of view but it's not at all funny for those who
can't even install
the game. I had bought the original CD and had a hard time to produce a CD
which
worked with my CD-drive. At last I found a solution to the problem but I
woun't explain
it here as it can  lead to more pirate copies of this fantastic game.
To make it short I bought a new CD drive later and everything worked
perfectly well with the
original CD too.

Bye,
Hans-Otto
