GPL online Pain to setup ?

by Turbojo » Tue, 31 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I have thought about doing some online racing but after looking at the steps
necessary to get connected I have been put off. Is it really as big a pain
as it looks ? I remember geting into an online race was simple in Cart
precision racing. Does it really have to be such a mess for GPL ?

GPL online Pain to setup ?

It looks worse than it is.  It was about an hour of reading for me, including a
bunch of related links, most of which you just skim over.  Mind you, I'm the
kind of guy who reads instructions and owner's manuals too, so I probably
covered more than I had to.  It's not that bad or that complex of a procedure,
they're just very thorough.  Trust me, it's worth it.

GPL online Pain to setup ?

From someone who never reads instructions unless it doesn't work right
I tried it for the first time this weekend and it was very easy.  A
couple downloads and installs and away you go.  BTW I tried MGPRS
gameservice and it was the simplier of the two and was without warping

or framerate stuttering, but without the vast number of available
users that GPL has.

GPL only SOUNDS like a pain to set up for -- the setup is not all that bad,
and VROC makes on-line racing with GPL no more difficult than surfing the
Web.  Finding a race on VROC is literally easier than using a search engine
to find info about VROC or GPL, so don't deprive yourself any longer --
start racing on-line with GPL ASAP!

After my original post I said to myself, self, why don't you just go ahead
and give it a try. Well I downloaded and installed GPL 1.1, Spyboy 2 & its
patch. My HUGE appologies to the poor guys I raced with at Silverstone late
last night. I really wasn't used to cars magically appearing out of nowhere.
I don't think I really creamed anyone but I know I sure wreaked havoc on
anyone near me. I was somehow running 6th with God only knows what setup. I
wasn't sure how to escape so I just crashed hard. That sure got me out.
Only problem I had was one of the installations completely screwed up my
engine sounds. This I can't accept. If it can't be resolved I will have to
revert back to the old setup and not race online. I am hoping to get
responses to my other post on this matter.
Thanks to everyone for the encouragement to try it out.

I give up on the 1.1 patch. Did a clean reinstall of GPL. Patched it with
1.1 Did the Mea***er 3.0 patch. Sound still sucks. The only thing that
cures the problem is to replace the 1.1 exe file with the original. (Back to
1.0) This tells me the problem is with 1.1 and not the Mea***er sound
patch. The question is : do I really need 1.1 ? If so it isn't worth the
trouble. The 2.5" ride height isn't a problem as I use Allison Hines setups
on every car. Most of the setups are 3.5". Is there really any other
compelling reason to upgrade ? With all the problems I have seen here
related to 1.1 why the hell did they release it ? If 1.0 won't work online
then I guess I will just be racing with the AI from now on.

GPL online Pain to setup ?

I believe when you install the 1.1 patch any sounds you may have changed will be
overwritten with the default sounds from the patch.  You should be able to
restore your sounds of choice using the same process you used to install them in
the first place.  The first time I went on-line, I redid all my options, setups,
etc. because I was prompted for a new driver name, which I entered.  I found out
later that all I had to do was hit the left arrow on the driver info screen and
there was my normal name with all my preferred options and setups.  Depending on
the connection speed and quality of the various drivers in the race, some cars,
including possibly your own, may wink in and out erratically which is a pain in
the ass.  Not much you can do about this, except try to join races with a fast
host.  Even then, one driver with a poor connection can wreak havoc on the
entire field, but hey, they want to have fun too.  To leave the race, all I've
ever had to do is bring the car to a complete stop, hit escape and then enter.
Your setups might feel all screwed up, because the 1.1 patch raised the minimum
ride height to 2.5", so no more go-kart setups.

The best advice I can give, if it's possible where you live, is to get a cable
modem connection at minimum.  My on-line experience was pretty dreary with a
56.6, even with good phone lines and a lot of tweaking.  My ISP just couldn't
cut the mustard, and huge lapses in the connection made driving a nightmare for
myself and anyone else in the race, so I quit.  With the cable modem, it's an
absolute treat to race on-line.  Hope this helps, hope to see you on VROC.

It does indeed sound like the Mea***er patch isn't compatible with V1.1.  If
you just gotta have those sounds you're screwed.  I've been running 1.1 since
the day they released it, only problem I've had is the turbo/slo-mo thing once
in a while.  You can race on-line using 1.0 on VROC, there's a race room for
people still using it.

Mea***ers sounds did work on my v1.1 - depending on your definition of
worked. For the Lotus, I could hear the beginning/end of the engine sound
playback loop clearly. Useless. If this was a compability problem, I'd be most
surprised though.

Maybe it's a problem with the US v1.1? I have the UK version, Mea***er might
have the german version? Hah! That's what you get for not having to have the
CD in the drive! :D

GPL online Pain to setup ?

Its not just that I gotta have the Mea***er sounds. I just prefer them. I
have again done a clean reinstall with just GPL and the 1.1 patch. Tested
sounds before and after patch. Before patch ok. After patch sucks. This
tells me the problem is definitely with 1.1 Should I try a different country
version ? I have the US version. I went to VROC in 1.0 and no one to race.
Guess 1.1 is the only way to do anything on VROC now.
Just thought of something.... Can and external sound program have anything
to do with it ? I do have Winamp on my system. I have it setup exactly as I
want it so would rather not change anything if this can't be related.
There has to be a simple solution to this, I just haven't stumbled onto it
yet.

Mea***ers installer really only uncompresses the .wav's into the \sound
folder?
Thought, he'd replace the sound.dat. Then his installer is more unnecessary
than I thought (Ever heard of WinZip, Mea***er?). BTW, the installer was
the only reason, why I didn't try his sounds (You can never know, what such
a thingy really does... ;-). I just wonder, which problems Turbojoe has
then...
