GPL SB PCI 128 problem...or God, CL is a pain in the as*

by Marc Collin » Mon, 05 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Updated my SB PCI 128 drivers to the Oct. 2 release to deal with a problem
in F1RS that only started after replacing my AWE 64 with the 128 only to
find that now the sound in GPL is screwed.  I now get staticky fits
sporadically, especially at higher/louder engine r.p.m.'s.  God, CL is a
pain in the ass with their drivers (I know, it's all been said before).

I am asking if anyone else has experienced this problem.  The latest drivers
are not Microsoft certified and apparently are still DX 5, not 6.  What's
the point, CL??

YEs, same staticy noise pn a SB PCI 64 using the 10/2/98 drivers. My
guess is that they broke something when they added the EAX support...

Reverting to the August 28 driver (allowing it to overwrite all newer
files) fixes the problem here.

An update--only the Eagle is affected by this problem!!  That was the car I
was using when I updated the drivers.  I have subsequently reinstalled GPL
to no effect and then tried other cars.  The Ferrari, BRM, Murasama,
Coventry, Brabham all sound fine...the Eagle is a staticky mess!!??!?!?!?!
(I haven't tried the Lotus, for no apparent reason).

Now does anyone have any ideas???

GPL SB PCI 128 problem...or God, CL is a pain in the as*

This static thing is weird.  All the cars do it for me, with a CL SB
64PCI(ensoniq-built).  I've unpacked the dat file and run the wavs with
Noisemaster, and they do it there, too.  You run the sampling rate slider up
and down, and it snaps, crackles and pops. ***!  I replaced the cosworth
sound with the one John O'Keefe had done for the demo, and no more static, for
the Lotus, at least.
Hoping for a solution with the Ferrari,

Steve B.

It does it with the lotus here
maybe it only affects the car your driving at the time you update the
drivers

just a thought

You mean only the Lotus has static for you--not the Eagle?  I am going to
try the Lotus right now and see if it is the only other car that has
intolerable sound since my "upgraded" sound drivers.

GPL SB PCI 128 problem...or God, CL is a pain in the as*

Well, without doing a 3 hour scientific test of the whole game...I mean
sim.!!!!...it seems as though all the cars and sounds are fine except if I
am driving the Eagle, it's engine sounds like a staticky mess and it also
affects the tire squealing sound--it too is staticky.  With the Lotus, the
engine has just a trace of static to it at higher r.p.m.'s, but the sound of
the suspension hitting a curb, etc. also is staticky...but the tire squeal
is fine.

Oh, brother.....................

I don't have the staticy mess, but the Eagle's sound keeps shifting
between channels.  At first I thought this was because of my being
closer to one side of the track than the other, thus the sound echoing
off the walls, grandstands, etc.  But, that doesn't seem to be the case,
it just bounces between speakers for no apparent reason.

Since I have a Pentium 166MMX, 32 meg RAM with a CL SB64 Gold AWE card and a
Viper 330 video card with 4 megs of RAM, I thought I'd run the demo first to
see if my machine could handle the GPL sim. I can't get past this sound thing.
I have the latest drivers installed but I also get this back and forth channel
switching going on...I can hear staticy sound in one side then it shifts to the
other. Beyond that, I don't know how to get in the car and on the track....I
get what looks like a VCR style window...click on the green light at the lower
right but it just sits there and makes noise. So I'm not certain this thing
will run on my system.

I have a SoundBlaster 128 and I find that there is a crackling sound when
using all the cars. Right now, I mostly use the Ferrari, and that crackling
sound is evident.

Other known problems with that sound card: F1RS sound will gradually
disappear. When i start the game, all the sounds are there. Then, sounds
disappear one by on over the course of 10 min. I have e-mailed Ubisoft...
they told me to press "Control-Alt-Delete"!

You guys mention something about new drivers for that sound card. What
drivers? I went to the Creative Labs site and there was no new drivers for
the Sound Blaster PCI 128. They even told (the tech support) that there was
no plans for new drivers. Where did you find yours? Just curious

Thanks...I figured that would happen.  Unfortunately, the original drivers
cause other sound problems...but I guess it's no contest in choosing between
GPL and everything else!!!
