F1RS SB PCI 128 Sound Problem

by Marc Collin » Sun, 04 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Installed a SB PCI 128 and both F1RS and Monaco demo started experiencing
sound losses...the tire squeal would just cut out at a certain point and not
come back...then the shifting sounds would go...etc. The only way to get
them back was to exit and re-start F1RS or the demo.

Installed Ubi's 3D sound patch (read somewhere that that was a good idea for
Ensoniq-based sound cards), and now all the sounds stay, but I get entire
channels (usually the right one but occasionally the left and sometimes
both) cutting out at certain points on certain tracks (along the Eau Rouge
side of the pit wall at Spa, e.g.).  They do always come back, though....

Everything worked perfectly with my old AWE32!

Of course, I have the latest drivers for the sound card (which appear to
still be DX 5) and DirectX 6.0 is installed and works perfectly in
everything else.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I'm having a similar problem with my new Ensoniq PCI card, usually my engine
sound drops out and will not return. I haven't tried the sound patches yet as
they didn't work on my old machine with a similar card. I'm also having the
same problem with GPL, except the sound will return if I shift-R.

I had similar problems when I went from my AWE32 to the pci128 a few weeks
ago...  over all I wasn't as impressed with the compatibility of the 128 as
I thought I would be.  I did notice a big improvment with the sound
quality...  when it works ;-)

I had to re-partition my drive on the weekend, so Windows98 got
re-installed, and there are upgraded pci128 drivers on Creative's site now.
Things seem to be a lot better now (not perfect  but hey...)  I can't say if
it was the new drivers or the fresh install of '98 without any AWE32 drivers
that might be*** around....  Quake2 still ***s off on me from time
to time, and the only thing that helps that is a reboot.  The other thing I
noticed is if I switch off 'LPT IRQ sharing'  it puts the legacy support
back to IRQ 5 instead of 7.  It takes up an extra IRQ but it seems to work a
little smoother.

Win98 actually,  I haven't had any DOS compatibility problems with the card.
My experience has been that DOS didn't mind IRQ sharing for the most part.
I didn't even have problems with my old SB, SB16 or AWE32 when I used IRQ7.
DOS was always a little more forgiving that way (same with Modems on COM3/4
:-) ).   The resources still get allocated in Win95/98 for the legacy
support....  likely for 'dos-box' compatibility.  Win95/98 has never liked
even the hint of a conflict, from what I've seen anyway.
