the award is given out early this year !

special announcement that the poorly received
GP3 will be patched as GP4.

They finally figured out the internet technology for
games :-)

Its easy to sit back and sneer at a game...ever tried writing one?

Lets see what its like before disgarding it as a patch eh?

Let's recall the history of GP3, where it was easy to see even before the
game was released that it was barely GP2.5.  The screenshots were SO
obvious, they were flags telling us about Geoff Crammond's lazy arse (who
has been lazy for the past decade, let's never forget).

It was funny to see the pro-Gp3 fans going "Wait until you see it! It's just
screenshots! It's just press releases!".  They were wrong for that, they
were also wrong when we just didn't care about GP2000.  So why would they be
right for GP4?

I fail to see where he called you a fan. Never the less, the point he made
remains.

"It was funny to see the pro-Gp3 fans going "Wait until you see it! It's

The point he made was nothing to do with my point, which was that Its easy
for people to be critical of things they couldnt (or wont) do themselves.  I
respect anyone who can produce a sim good enough to be sold.  Saying that, I
was very disappointed with gp3, I thought it should have been so much
better, its part of the reason I am making my own sim.

"everyone's a critic" ;)

IMO, the argument of "if you don't like the software, make it yourself"
doesn't hold water.  Just another "perk" that's thrown at the software
industry other industries don't enjoy,  for shoddy work sometimes
released(along with the "all software has bugs, so it's ok if X software
does, etc., etc.)

If I buy a car and it doesn't work right, I'm not going to build my own; I
_payed_ the auto maker for that.   Same can be said for anything from a
coffee maker to a pc.

Just my Sunday morning .02 rant :)

just as easy as being critical you could do, would do, and have done.
I don't see any point there.

bah!  whether a game is sold or not has virtually nothing to do with
quality.

so you're allowed to criticize GP3, but John isn't?

Yeah a game that exists that I have played and didnt like.

I'm just saying there are those who "do the work", and the rest of the world
just moans that it should be better.  I would rather be one of the people
who makes a difference rather than someone who just talks about how it could
be better.

You do have a point, and I understand the view.

Although,
Its a little different when the product needs to be out in such a short
time, and has such a short life.

All the best
Ash

PS. Couldnt be bothered continuing with this discussion - got stuff to do.

No, it is in no way different! A product is made and regardless of the functions
it is supposed to perform it is either well made or shoddy goods. If getting the
quality right takes a little longer or costs a little more, so be it. In the
games bisiness perhaps firing a graphical artist and hiring a couple of testers
with suitable powers instead would do the trick. "QA"? Ha!

Right. Stuff to do. Lint removal?

No, fire the guy who creates the clonks and plonks in the menus, who always
makes the menu music so loud that you wish the engine on the track had a
similar power, or who decides that there mandatorily has to be an intro that
tells the user which games he is loading and who made it, then again which
game he is loading and who made it, then again which game he is loading and
who made it, and then in the climax-heaven of intrology, which other nice
games this marvellous company makes, accompanied by boneshaking doodle-doo
and doodle-dee, always equipped with some sort of click-away key but never
the same in all of the intro-screens (although it's usually Esc, Space,
BackSpace, Enter, Left-Mouse). Oh yes, and fire the guy too who develops the
keyboard layouts for all these games and decides that after three sims that
nicely adhered to the widely used habits, there's now time for one where the
flaps are not lowered by F or V, and the gear is of course actuated using
'e' (g would be too easy).

Yep, lets fire these guys and invest that money into... erm, what was I
talking about? ;-)

I agree with you Jens, I think that the compromise between getting the game
out and getting it right far too often sides with the $$$.

GP3 wasnt particularly buggy if a remember, except for the terrible network
"support", it just wasnt that good compared to what had happened in between
GP2 and GP3.  I still think its unfair to judge GP4 before anyone here has
driven it.

All the best
