Hi Jens

I think its a cool idea, but I also had a little look over the code and
from what I saw it looks well written and nearly as importantly (for
maintainence) well laid out and documented.

I am considering how to implement the network code (as a side issue atm)
for my sim.  I thought it would be nice to get an idea how GPL did it as
it has, IMO, the best network code of any racer (probably bettered in N4).

Keep up the good work
Ash

The HUGE problem is that Grand Prix 3 took a LONG time to be released. If,
lets say it was released a year or two after GP2, then it wouldn't be so
bad. But since it took forever, and they promised SO MUCH, it is considered
a folly.

It was never patched, it was never fixed, Microprose and Geoff Crammond
never cared about their customers.  There was many criticism of GP2 back
then.  It was far from perfect, it had weird bugs and features, and things
that did (and still does after 10 years!) raised the eye-brows of everybody.
That's where it all started, where people started to think of Geoff Crammond
has somebody who isn't perfect.  Really, all his previous titles were
incredible, even the non-racing ones.

GP2000, a let down also.

Being picky I know, but I'd say F1RS knocked GP2 off myself.  I liked
GP2...........except it was extremely poorly written, requiring cpu's that
weren't even on the drawing board at the time, and I really didn't like how
it slowed things down resulting in highly inaccurate times, etc.
Crammond hasn't released a good racing title since F1GP IMO, which is
still great(still have it :)

Exactly

Nope, GP2000 improved GP3 bigtime.

> Its easy to sit back and sneer at a game...ever tried writing one?

I sneer at movies, books, the government, some of the plumbing work i've
had done and some of the cars i've owned. But you know what? To this day
I've never made a movie, written a book, run a country, qualified as a
plumber or designed and built a car!

Are you saying I don't have the right to criticize any of those things
just because i haven't done any of that stuff myself?

Do you realize how silly you're being?

Yes, very intelligent code by the Papy boys.

You too. Now don't forget to let me know when to test your next demo on my Kyro
II card, you hear? ;-)

Ok,ok - maybe it does sound a little silly :)

What I should have said (and meant) was

"Its easy to sit back and sneer at a game...Do you know the effort that goes
into one of these?"

How did GP3 do in $ sales as compared to
GPL? It would be depressing to discover that despite being univerally praised
on this board that GPL actually 'tanked" when compared to GP3's profits.

Also that would undercut the argument that the marketplace always rewards
excellence.....

Hope my suspicion is wrong

It's common knowledge that GPL didn't sell well.  It's also common
knowledge that it had nothing to do with quality, but rather;

-perception of it being to hard.
-covered a time not of interest to many(the largest reason by far for low
sales IMO).
-demanding on hardware at the time(the least reason IMO).

  At least that's my understanding.

Yeah it's hard but most guys will think "it's only hard for those other
losers". That's the way guys think ;)

This is why I didn't buy it for a long time. In those days (3 years ago) I
would buy almost every driving game out there (NFS x, Screamer, Toca, SCGT,
Viper, Rally Champ, Nascar x, etc.) but didn't buy GPL because the idea of a
game based around cars the same age as me didn't interest me. I read the
rave reviews but it didn't grab my attention.

When I finally did buy it (a couple years ago now) it brought about a
complete switch in my buying habits so now I am more discriminating about
which driving games I buy. I am not finicky about the type of racing (F1,
Rally, sports cars, Nascar, etc.) - I'll try anything if it will give me
some of the "feel" of driving a racing car. So far only 2 games have come
close: GPL and F1 2001. Everything else was just lacking that "feel" in my
opinion. (I didn't give N4 much of a chance - it just doesn't do it for me
somehow...)

And despite the fact that I like F1 2001's "feel" I hardly ever load it up.
The reason: no significant online play. GPL is *BY FAR* the best online
racing game out there. It has its flaws but with the right group of drivers
(i.e. a league), a good connection and a high end PC, it is the most
immersive racing game I've ever played. I finish a league race totally
spent. A close dice at Michigan this year had me so hyper my foot was
literally shaking on the gas pedal. I've only felt like that before in a
real car after a near miss. No other game has done that for me yet. N4 might
but I don't have the time to get fast enough to race with the good guys.

Look past the "GPL or nothing" fanatics, look past the era of the game, and
give it a try. Once you get past its flaws (and it has lots - it's only a
game) and get hooked into the online play, you might just find yourself
posting notes like this one a year from now.

A lot of people who bought it early probably gave up on it because it ran
like shit on their PC. Same thing with N4 and every other leading-edge sim.
They always want more hardware than you can currently buy. I always wonder
what PC's the developers use - do they have time travel machines or
something??

I imagine that even if the sales were dismal, it could be written off as
development costs for Nascar 4.

The only reason it would matter is if the lower sales numbers hurt future
possibilities for the genre.  Most of us know that GPL sold poorly compared to
other games.  That doesn't matter to me - I already HAVE a couple of
copies...<g>
