There is nothing on the Usenet that forces somebody to reply to have a
correlation with the previous post he was replying to.  It had a vague point
in common, and I expanded the thread into a bigger horizon.

But frequently the $$$ are misspent. Derek Smart has one thing going for him: He
is awfully insistant that he wants the game to be the way he wants it! (It may
be sucjy or not - but it is *his* game).

Right you are. I think that the scepticism is about the company. The product may
well be a winner - or a FPS Football 2000!

LOL!

Cheers,
Jens

How about those Raiders? Nothing vague about their play!

Agree wholeheartedly that one shouldn't criticise any software before it's
even released; that would be madness.

However the facts only promote feelings of pessimism as far as I'm
concerned; I thought GP3 was really GP2 with a 3dfx patch and weather....I
think the reason it was such a disappointment is that it was a long time
coming and the press had us believe Crammond et al were working their nuts
off over it.  The reality was it was out of date at it's time of release, a
sin for any game.

Will GP4 be any different?  Hmm.....

It could go either way - perhaps the next classic, perhaps not :)

Congratulations on the GPL Proxy btw, great idea and nice code :) - [taking
a frank-like tangent in thread :)]

All the best,

I don't agree. There are those who do the work, and there are those who
'consume' the work. If the consumers don't like the end product, they'll let
you know. I feel sorry for the people who get flamed for the software they
made. It's quite embarrassing, because it probably still takes a big effort
to make a 'bad' piece of software. But if you can't stand the heat, get out
of the kitchen. This is the way it works. It can be tough, but in the end
the standard of work will be better. And if they get it right, they don't
mind taking the credit for it, right? Grand Prix Legends for instance is one
of the most praised games that I know of (I guess I've been here too
long...), so it's definitely not all moans and groans from the consumers
(who are expected to pay a lot of money for this stuff, I might add).

someone who just talks about how it could

Well, no one's stopping you :) But if there weren't any people talking about
how it could be better, the people who make the stuff wouldn't have a clue
how to make it better. So we all need each other, in the end..!

Lol, ok then fair enough, your point about its even very difficult to make a
bad sim is something I was trying to say (less ellegantly of course!)

and yes, no-one is stopping me so thats why i am going for it :)

Well, I also meant what I said about feeling sorry for some software makers.
You simply have to imagine what it would feel like to see your laborious
work get scoffed, by the very audience you were aiming to please! Must be
horror. But although it's tough, it's also fair.

Just remember my wise words, and you'll be alright ;)

Listen up.. A job is a job. Whether you are a computer programmer , an
office clerk, truck driver, brain surgeon  or whatever. If you don't do your
job well, you should expect some kind of rebuke or criticism . People who
hand over the cash  are perfectly entitled to criticize something as shoddy
as GP3 was.
Who the f*** said there were no major bug's in it ?  I guess they didn't try
and configure a MSFF wheel in the game. HA !

Thank you! :-) Now you just made it impossible to criticize you. Just like
ymenard

Is that "nice code" because you read the code and though it was well-written
(apart from certain ugly bits such as the version-check)? Because the in-code
documentation was nice? Or because you felt it was a cool way to do
broadcasting?

good point about not having driven GP4
but we have had GPI / GPI.5 / GP 3

do we still need to "learn another lesson "???

for the terrible network
had happened in between

Lets review,

Grand Prix 1, the best simulator of its day
Grand Prix 2, the best simulator of its day, only really knocked off its
crown when GPL came out.
Grand Prix 3, a let down

so, 1 bad release (which thousands of people loved!) and we have a
folly?  I think not.
