Anyone know how to sort this one out ?
I got the zipfile from ftp.std.com (vendors/papyrus/nasdemo.zip) at
about 6pm 5/10/94. when I unzip and attempt to run it it says something
along the lines of : can't find (ROL.) incomplete version?
and terminates, does anyone know what to do about this, or where I can
find a full version?

where possible as our mailfeed for rec.autos.simulators is *very* slow

Many thanx

I have same problem.
Please post the answer to USENET.

Thanks in advance.

Re: problems with the Nascar demo.

When you guys unzipped, you didn't include the option to preserve the
original directory structure.  So the necessary subdirectories for running
the demo are not there....  Make sure you include that option when unzipping
the demo; it works fine for me!

Make sure you use PKUNZIP in the following fashion:

pkunzip -d nasdemo.zip

You need to use the -d to force pkunzip to recreate the subdirectories for NASDEMO.

Good luck and have fun!!

*gulp* OK enough flames.. I'm frazzled.

I know it was stupid, I forgot the -d switch and I am familiar with Pkzip
I also feel very silly.

Thanks to all those who sent helpful mail!

OK, I downloaded the demo, unzipped it with 2.04G, used the "-D"
option, the files seem to be all there in their appropriate locations.

I have 386DX40 w/8MB ram.  Cirrus SVGA w/1MB.  SoundBlaster 16/SCSI-2.
Not the hottest setup in town, but I would think it could handle this.

I've run the setup pgm, and I've tried various sound card choices.  If
I use SB16-stereo, I get the music OK, but it makes a bunch of other
WIERD noises that I think are supposed to be voice or sound effects.
I've had the best luck with setting it for NO SOUND CARD.

When I actually get into the demo, I can start the car with the up
arrow, but then it carreens up to the right until it hits the wall, no
matter WHAT I try to make the car do.  That's when it even runs - most
of the time it just locks up right after the car starts moving.

I'm not a *total* idiot.  I RTFM'd, and I've gotten lots of other
driving simulators to run on this machine (The Speed Racer game being
one of my favs...).  In fact, this is the ONLY thing I've ever had this
much trouble running!

Obviously others have gotten this to work.  What's the problem w/my
machine?  This game *can* run on a 386, can't it???

I don't know why the demo would lock up, unless you don't have enough ram
and aren't running the memory manager.. the steering problem comes from
your keyboard.  Invest in a cheap joystick.  You can't drive NASCAR
Racing with the keyboard like you can with ICR or World Circuit (okay,
you CAN, but you're not going to go very far).

Well I had that same problem until I unzipped it with the -d option.
Seems that it wants the files in certain places and nowhere else. Give
it a shot.
PKUNZIP -d nasdemo.zip

Granted, I didn't expect top speeds from the keyboard, but I figured I
would at least be able to perform basic steering functions.  Once I
touch the up-arrow, the car accelerates and turns right, until I end up
against the wall...

I have a cheap joystick - I'll give it a try.  But driving by joystick
doesn't sound like much fun...
