I'm actually bored with sim racing in general to be honest.  Alot of empty
expectations and promises over the last couple of years.  =(

I'm waiting on the 948cc Bugeye Sprites.  worked on many but never drove
them out side of a trip from the gas pump to the camp ground at the Glen.  I
also owned a 1200cc 40Hp VW Bug, would love to have taken that out for a
spin on a closed course. and a 1966 Triumph Spitfire (1100cc?)

But this is coming from someone who loves the F3's in GPL ;-)

Nothing, but the question was about a computer game.

Actually, it's at least a year older than that cuz you have to count the demo,
which was fantastic.  I mean, all there was for a LONG time was Watkings Glen in
the Lotus, Eagle and (BRM? if memory serves)  with lousy fixed setups with
people trying to get a 1:06:xx  Then finally we got Monza and the whole thing
started all over again.

GPL is the greatest computer game since Pong.  I don't play it as much as I used
to, but I will never get completely tired of it.  Long live GPL.

You really believe this?
The lack of sales was no doubt due to the era the sim was based upon. I
mean, how would people know how much skill it would require by looking at
a box on the shelf? You think everyone out there tried the demo and
thought it was too hard, so in return it didn't sell well?

One could look at the # of returns of the product, that would indicate the
challenge level may have been beyond the average race simmer.  Also one
could look at the flight sim genre and see the slow death of highly
realistic flights sims and the growth of the simpler sims.
We live in an era where some of the finest products "could" be produced, but
most likely won't due to the need to satisfy the 'mass market'

Well, I'm going to repute this one a little bit (don't even know if that's a
real word or not, I htink I just made it up).

I did mention that the main point was _complete_ control of the car under
racing conditions, not fast lap-ability.

I just don't see how anyone who regularly gets into heated 10-15-20-etc. lap
battles, with constant lead-changes and head games, and psych-outs, and all
the fantastic little nuances that RACING has to offer (not hotlapping) could
find it boring.
Obviously, people will find it boring eventually, but I don't think I ever
will.  Like I said, nothing models all the mental aspects of racing as well
as this, and once you get VERY good at driving a car, it gets to be more and
more of a head thing and less of a skill thing, because the ability is just
there, and it's a matter of psyching out your openent, or setting up that
pass for laps laps before making your move, etc. etc.
That could never get boring for me.

I think people have just been having boring racing, and it's not the gpl
that is boring.

But again, that's just my opinion.

curtis

PS - I am in NO WAY insuating that you or your friend, or anyone else for
that matter are not as skilled as anyone else, and are merely hotlappers or
anything of the sort.  Just making an additoin to my point because of points
you brought up.
Although, I must also add, that I assume (I don't know this for sure) it
would take a VERY many laps of a track to get a world record and keep it,
and if that is the case, maybe that is your friend's problem with being
bored of GPL.  When i was trying to get my gplRank down I started getting
bored too, then I switched to the cooper and did some hot and heavy racing,
and forgot about lap times, lost my player.ini, didn't care, and that is
when you find the true value of GPL.  In the racing.  It's just unfortunate,
that GPL often makes that so hard to do.  (few people can really really race
without crashing, hitting you, etc. etc. - mainly because of the lack of
familiarity of other drivers, etc.etc.)

I for one probably will ALWAYS have it installed on my PC (at least in the
forseeable future).  For me its not about the realistic driving model, great
online play, or even improving my GPL Rank...its about reliving one of the
greatest periods of Formula 1 history.  And while the realistic physics,
great online play, and improving my GPL Rank certianly help me enjoy it more
than say, Spirit of Speed; its the historical thing I love about it.  I
unfortunately wasnt alive to see GP racing in the 60s or 70s and I only
caught the last bit of the 80s as I was born in 82.  So for me GPL is as
close as I will ever get to living during that era.  This is also the reason
that a good 75% of the cars I have downloaded for other games (mainly SCGT
but also TPTAP) arent from the past 10 years.  Most of them are from the
early 90s and before.  Bored with GPL?  Not me...not as long as I can relive
that piece of racing history whenever I feel like it.  My own personal time
machine...

Well, to be frankly, I haven't played a simracinggame for almost a
month. The only *** i've done on my computer the last couple of
weeks are Day of Defeat and Return to Castle Wolfenstein demo.

But I've signed up again for the fourth season of the league I'm in,
so I guess the GPL spark will come again.

I don't play it as much as I used to, but I don't think I'll ever give
it up entirely until a new and better pre-downforce era racing sim comes
out. And how long will that be?

Besides, my interest is sparked again whenever someone releases a great
track - like Solitude, Bremgarten or Le Mans Sarthe. Looking forward to
Mont Tremblant, Reims, Montjuic Park, Clermont Ferrand and Pescara.

Nope. Reasons:

1) The only current sim of comparable ability is N4 - and I find NASCAR
dreary to say the least. I want European racing, with road courses and
right turns (and that doesn't mean conversions from elsewhere!).

2) No WSC - still.

3) Rally Trophy isn't out yet...
