ever since fiddling with the GF4MX and putting the old gfx card
(GF2MX) back in I have a strange problem in online races (GPL):
Connection (DSL here) is fine and stable, then about every 60
seconds or so latency shoots all the way up and stays there for
a second or two causing all visible cars to warp off the track
or disappear, then latency goes down again to normal levels.
My *** box runs Win98SE and is connected to a LAN (10MBit
RG58) and a Linux-based router (Mandrake 8.2).
Has anyone seen this kind of behaviour before?
I have tried the following:
- run tcpdump on the network connection on my linux router; nothing
suspicious to be seen in traffic; just plain old GPL UDP stuff, even
during those "peak" latency times.
- disabled WINS lookup in network setup (Win98SE)
- changed interrupts of gfx and network card (pci amd pcnet brand,
10Mbit) GFX card and network card share the same interrupt.
- downgraded the nvidia drivers (I had updated them to 29.42) to 28.32
- tested the connection under linux: ftp transfer speeds are normal,
so I'm pretty sure it's not the network card
- installed the latest pcnet drivers off amd's website
- updated the BIOS on my compaq deskpro to 2.04
- fiddled with the network card driver parameters
Still, no go. So short of a complete re-install, what options should I
try?
How can I enable the latency meters in N2002 to check if the problem
persists in this sim?
Cheers & thanks in advance,
Uwe
