TRD2/GPL: ATI Video Problems - Follow-up

by bhoeni » Wed, 02 Jun 2004 06:33:48

Ever since installing TRD2 on my system, I haven't been able to find a
ATI video driver that plays nicely with both it and GPL.

I started at Cat 3.7, which ran GPL just fine.  But with TOCA (with
patch 1.1), the 3.7's didn't display the AI cars properly when having
mirrors activated.  So, I decided to try the Cat 4.1's.  Now TOCA worked
fine with the mirrors activated, but GPL looked bad -- "shimmery" and
the edges weren't smooth.   I was informed that the 4.1 ATI driver
didn't support AA and AF in GPL, and that this was fixed in Version
4.5.   So, I again updated the video driver -- this time to 4.5.  Now,
it seems like I'm back where I started -- GPL looks fine, but TOCA has
the same graphical problems as I originally had.  Updating TOCA to patch
1.2 (the latest) didn't help matters either.  When I turn the mirrors
off in TOCA, the problem is fixed, but who wants to race without
mirrors?

So, has anyone found an ATI driver that works properly with both TOCA
and GPL?  If so, which one is it?

My system specs are: Radeon 9700 Pro; AthlonXP2100; Windows XP Pro.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

TRD2/GPL: ATI Video Problems - Follow-up

I really hope there is a solution, I'm planning a move to X800 XT-PE from my
Ti4600 but I would like to have the excellent compatibility I have now and
add great fps with high FSAA.

Currently it seems ATI has problem at providing that, TOCA2 being a good
example (No FSAA, texture problem...).
Hopefully the next Catalyst will fix all TOCA2 related bugs and keep GPL
great looking.

If not I might look at the 68xx serie but it's not my first choice... but
you never know...

Is this your only problem with games with your 9700?

Good luck.
