N3 problems with ATI Rage LT Pro video card

by Ed Carpente » Fri, 19 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Hello Fellow Sim Racers,

Just picked up a copy of N3.
First I tried to install with the Glide/3DFX option (which the showed as
"detected") and that did not work. When I tried to run N3 I just got a
dialog box that said "ScreenGetMode Failed". So then I tried to install with
the Direct3D option selected and that did not work. When I tried to run N3 I
just got a black screen and system hung. Last but not least I tried the
software option that finally worked. I hoped for better than this.

Does anyone know how to get N3 to work with the ATI Rage LT Pro?
I am using a Compaq, K62, 380Mhz, 64Meg Ram.

Thanks in Advance,

Ed

If I'm not mistaken, the ReadMe states that they have had some
problems getting N3 to work with the ATI Rage LT Pro. I own the same
card, and when I run it in D3D, it looks cack, with all sorts of gaps
and corrupt textures. I've stuck to Software rendering instead, even
though it's no where near as impressive as it would be running it in
D3D or Glide.

They suggest installing the latest drivers for your graphics card.
Haven't tried that yet...

It states in the readme that the ATI Rage Pro cards do not work with N3.  I
also had the same problem since I had the same card until I bought a voodoo
3 2000 last night.  I was concerned about how much of a difference from
running in software mode and in 3dfx would be, and whether it was worth an
upgrade.  Now that I've installed the voodoo, what an incredible difference.
I considered an upgrade for over a month, so I seriously thought about it,
and if you can afford one, you won't be disappointed.....

You've not seen anything yet. Take a look at the differences between
software and glide in Quake 2, or Half Life. It's those games which
will show you the biggest difference in performance. You'll be amazed!

Dave,
Thanks for the info. I'm not sure that I want to spend the money for a new
card. Did you try to obtain new drivers from ATI? I wish I understood where
the problem lies with this issue. Is it junk hardware, junk software, or a
combination of both? It sure is a bummer! I was looking forward to the the
better graphics.
