TOCA Driver 2 Demo Rebooting problem

by Darf » Tue, 27 Apr 2004 01:02:36

Just wondering if anyone else is having this trouble or knows how to fix it.
This only happens while hosting, I get a brief Blue Screen and the computer
reboots itself.

Any help would be appreciated

Specifications, like Operating System?  Video Card?

One thing for sure, if you're running a virus program in the background,
you're asking for trouble.

Check out the Readme - I remember seeing something in there about onboard
soundcards causing 'occasional' bluescreens.

I Read the Readme
the bluescreening was related to an onboard Soundcard
Thanks anyway

OT, but we've seen a lot of students get hit by viruses who had up-to-date
versions of NAV...

There's the problem, you're running Norton's AV.  I'd disable it.  Does more
harm than good, is my experience.

Careful, you're slamming a product many people like.  They may take offense and
start attacking you...

Slamming a product?  In THIS newsgroup?  NEVER!

Slamming or not, I think Norton's AV stinks.  At least that's my experience.
To have the thing continuously running in the background is pure folly.
That program has screwed more things up on my computer than it has fixed.

I think that if you're careful and don't do stupid things, there's no need
to have a virus program always running.

Now if you're wanting to protect sensitive, job-related things, then that's
a different story.  If that were the case, I'd have two computers, one for
work and one for ***.  And I'd keep NAV off my *** machine.

Let's face it, I think most would agree that NAV (or any other AV program)
is not a good thing to be running when ***.

So it goes.

I was just making a reference to the thread where I got jumped for dissing
another program.

In this case, I agree with you.  I've gotten to the point where I avoid *all*
things Norton.  I think it started with the "First Aid" program.  I absolutely
loved the original Norton Utilities, and used them all the time.  First Aid
started a slide where it seemed that every program they made screwed up
SOMETHING on every machine it was installed on.  I've had to fix machines for
many friends after Norton did its 'magic' on them.  And as I've stated before,
we've had students with up-to-date NAV defs *still* get hit with viruses that
were a year old.  I have absolutely no confidence in NAV's ablilty to protect
any computer against viruses.

Probably true.  But if you don't have a firewall of some kind, there are
viruses that *can* still get you.  Opening an infected attachment is no longer
the only way to get hit. :-(

Correct.

Wow, I didn't know it was this bad on the Windows side of NAV too. On
the Mac side, the story is almost exactly the same (used to be a good
program, which gradually went totally down the drain). Maybe they got
some programmers to to both versions - that'd explain a lot...

Show me one - I'm on my OS X machine, and the first one has yet to be
reported  ;)
