Eldred's Silverstone Race

Well, I finally had all my ducks in a row (correct fuel load, decent
setup, and I wasn't really in much of a hurry).  After 8 laps, someone in
a Cooper was riding the grass letting cars by and decided to get back on
the track just as I was getting ready to go by him.

When he veered back onto the track, I tried to slow and turn left more,
but I was carrying too much speed into the corner and over-corrected.  I
spun without leaving the racing surface or hitting anything/anyone.  I
was simultaneously beginning to accelerate and congradulating myself for
my deft recovery maneuver when a Lotus stuck his nose in my gearbox as I
was flipped over.

That Cooper almost had to have been me... I tried to check for sure, but my
replay only goes back as far as lap13.

All I can do is apologise unreservedly. I wasn't aware of your presence,
otherwise I would not have attempted to rejoin the track. I wasn't in any
great hurry or trying to limit damage from my half spin either. I just
didn't see / hear you, I'm sorry.

Damn... I was pretty proud of that race until I read this.

I was just severely disappointed that I was only in it for nine of the 80
laps, and was removed through no real fault of my own.

My record thus far in Eldred's GP's is less than stellar.  I ran out of
gas at Zandvoort because I had the wrong setup loaded, and bent my
suspension at the ring on lap 1 turn 1 (both were my fault).

I got discoed on lap 3 at Zandy and then got it into my head that the
Ring race was a day later than it actually was.

At Silverstone I connected, found my brake pedal was playing up, and so
shut down and restarted. I managed to get back only to have a different
brake problem. I restarted again, ran some training laps, found
everything was OK, and restarted VROC.

Found it was in "transition" mode with 20/20 drivers. No race for me :-(

Congrats Andre.....

Great (mental)battle, If I never ever see another pitboard saying "WARRI -2"
it will still be too soon.... I have never before driven so many laps
without any major mistakes... I think these GP lenght races are helping me
improve the mental part of my driving a lot.

Started in 4 position and got a clean getaway... let a follow Ferrari pass
me into T3 ( and another slipped right by in the same manuever) and set out
to just keep them in my sights. Lapped quite consistently and at some point
the board claimed that I was up into second... Warringa 7-8 seconds behind
and Jon a full minute ahead.

I had to get out of my chair to turn the volume up... my girlfriend
suddently cranked the livingroom speakers up, so I was having trouble
concentrating, that little move cost me 5 seconds and the next 10-15?? laps
the board just said "WARRI -2".

I tried to keep cool, but eventually I broke, lost it and Andre passed me.
Got going right away and follow him closely. Now the board said "WARRI +2"
for some laps ;)

Then my wheel quit working properly AGAIN and after 2-3 laps of shaky
driving I decided to kickstart it. Drove to a halt at the side of the road,
turned the power (to the wheel) off and on again. That does one of two
things... either the wheel starts functioning again, or the computer
dies.... the computer died.

The really wierd part is that even though i could use no buttons, the mouse
or the wheel, I could still see other people in my rearviewmirror .... I
really hope I was stationary according to the server also ;) So if a Ferrari
drove around like the driver was blind, I apologize.

All in all a fun race for me personally, hope to be a part of the next event
also.

Mikkel

They surely are.. In pickup races I have no problems with my nerves,
but during league races I often get really nervous, especially during
the end of the race, and often I start to***up then. These 2-hour
races really help focussing on staying on the track.

Sure, blame the girl :)
I qualified 10th if I remember correctly and during the start I also
let a couple of cars pass me. The start was surprisingly clean as far
as I could see. Especially at Silverstone this is quite rare!
During the first laps I had to avoid a couple of wrecks, I could pass
a couple of cars and I quickly gained position.
You were at a certain moment in front of me, and indeed I was -2
seconds behind you for a lap or 10-15.
I wasn't trying to gain on you, or to stay close to you.
I was only concentrating on staying on the track. I had in my mind to
only start pushing it when there would only be 20-30 laps left.
And to my surprise you then spinned in front of me and I could pass
you.
I can't remember what happened then, I believe I had position 3 or 2,
anyway, at a certain point I was 2nd and Jon Anderson was driving in
front of me, with a huge advantage of 1:30.
Then I saw some Pit In messages from Jon. This distracted me, since I
couldn't understand what the hell he was doing, pitting in after every
lap. It turned out that he had some weird blag flag problems.
From lap 30 or so I was at nr.1 position, with nr.2 being 30 seconds
or so behind me. He didn't gain on me so I could drive on quite
relaxed.

Around lap 40 I lapped a couple of guys, who let me all pass safely at
the first oportunity, thanks gentleman.

Around lap 70 I spinned, but since the rest of the field was -1 lap
behind this was not a problem.

Boy was I glad to see the chequered flag, including the practice it
was a 2.5 hour drive and every part of my body was hurting now.
But it was worth it, completing 80 laps without shift-R felt great,
especially at Silverstone, the track which I dislike the most in GPL
:)

I've just watched the beginning of the Silverstone replay (stunning
footage... looks just like a real race in places <g>) and as Daffy Duck
would say : "AHA! -An imposter!!"

Wasn't me John, Brett Cammack is the one you want to hit.

I had a similar incident, but luckily my efforts in determining if someone
was still behind me proved sufficient as I re-entered on a "clean" track.

Phew!! -I can show myself in public again. ;-)

Jan./who's praying he didn't inadvertently shove someone else into the
fence.

OK, since we're all confessing our sins, I rear-ended a Ferrari on lap 10 or
so. Came around a corner and he was just getting back up to speed after
spinning (?) and I smoked him, sending him on his roof and out. Due to the
invulnerable-nose feature of GPL I was able to continue and was up to 5th
when I blew my engine lap 22 or so (bad shifting habits due to running Int
Short races).

All in all I was very pleased with the quality of the driving. I will look
for "realistic" damage on line from now on - people are smarter when the
stakes are higher. That start was GREAT - lots of give and take and no red
haze visible anywhere :)

>Wasn't me John, Brett Cammack is the one you want to hit.

Oops, my bad.  I fear John and me were victims of GPL's
"one-car-behind" constraint.  Besides the mirrors, I was keenly
listening for more cars, too, but apparently without sufficient
success.  I was really busting my ass trying to stay clear of one and
all.  I also cannot recall reentering the track abruptly, although I
can appreciate the predictive nature of on-line play could make it
appear as a such.  I do recall making a less-than-casual move back
onto the track, but only to keep the wheels from being removed by the
hay bales preceding the bridge on Farm Straight.

Like John, I was punted rather sharply in the *** at the end of the
Hangar Straight and spent what seemed an eternity staring down the
nose of my Cooper watching the pavement and then grass passing below.
By some miracle, I never passed over the "point of no return"
vertically and it fell back onto all four wheels unharmed.

My race ended at lap 20 when, while trying to leave the line open
entering T3, I was a hair too fast for that wide a line and
encountered the bank with enough force to turn turtle.

Please accept my apology, John.  I can certainly understand your
frustration.  I would never intentionally cause such a thing to
happen.  I certainly wasn't out on the grass on purpose, Silverstone
tends to find me there after several of the faster corners.

Honestly, I was shocked when I signed onto Vroc about two hours later
and saw there were still 10 laps to go!  I don't believe I would've
given it a go had I realized there was a possibility of that sort of
time commitment.  Man, I would've been a basket case by the halfway
point!  I will definitely demiur from further such contests until I've
better got my chops up at a particular track and I can set that sort
of time aside.  What do you guys use, leg urinals or something??  LOL

Congrats to Andre.  I could not believe that anyone could hang a car
out like that so early into such a race without seemingly a care about
wrecking.  Amazing display of prowess...

Regards,
Brett C. Cammack
