Lightening the load in a multiplayer GPL game?

From several posts that I've read, it seems implied that you
can improve frame rates in a multiplayer GPL game by
having an extra computer act solely as a server.  No one
actually races on that machine, and all players race on machines
that are clients of that machine.  Has anyone tried this to see
if it makes a big difference?
