GPL and DirectX 6 ?????

by Chris Roger » Mon, 28 Dec 1998 04:00:00

  I just upgraded my system to a PII450, 64mb 100mhz ram, 12mb Creative V2
video, and I am having lock-up problems with GPL.  Seems there is a problem
on my machine once I load the directX 6 drivers.  Once they are loaded the
game freezes and crashes constantly.

With the directX 5  drivers, the game runs flawlessly.  Am I the only one,
or are others experiencing this?  If this is a well known problem can anyone
guide me to a solution?  Anyone know if Papyrus is working on a patch?

At least I can run this sim with a little configuring but it gets old
changing video drivers every time you switch between programs.

Thanks in advance,
  Chris

Put version 2.53 (DX5) of Glide2x.dll in your GPL directory and it will be
used only for GPL, while the Glide2x.dll in C:\windows\system will be used
for all other games.

This works for me, Brian

GPL and DirectX 6 ?????

This may not be much help, but I haven't had the first problem with
DX6 in GPL on my system. My system config is:

Celeron 300A overclocked to 450Mhz
Abit BH6 motherboard
64 megs PC100 RAM
Creative Voodoo Banshee 16 meg video card

I hope you get it working. I don't know what your system was before
you upgraded it, but coming from a P166 to the 450Mhz Celeron made GPL
a different game. Just wait til you see it at 36 fps with all graphics
on. It is breathtaking.

As you've pointed out, the 3DFX DirectX6 video drivers do not work with GPL.
This is not a problem with DirectX6, but rather a problem with that set of video
drivers.  Unless you NEED the newer 3DFX DirectX6 video drivers, simply back up a
revision on the video drivers and you should be ok.  If you do need the 3DFX
DirectX6 drivers for another application, then your only choice is to do as you
described and switch video drivers when you want to run GPL.

Thanks to all for the info!  I will try putting the old Glide driver into my
GPL directory.  If that does not work I will continue switching drivers back
and forth until a fix is made available because I am running programs that
require Dx6.

Coming from a P200 non mmx I am stunned at how different, beautiful, and
TOTALLY playable this sim has become with the PII450!!!!   I am driving
better than ever at 36fps all details, all opponents!  What an awesome
sim...I can't wait for the next version of Nascar and Cart racing built on
the GPL engine!!

Chris,
Please note the advice above. It is not DX6 that is the problem, the
Microsoft core drivers are fine. It is the DX6 V2 drivers that are the
problem. Use DX6 + the release DX5 V2 drivers.

Well again thanks to all.  I put the three files into the GPL directory as
was suggested to me and ALL my problems are solved!  I am now running GPL
flawlessly along with all my #DFX games in Dx6.

Thanks again,

GPL and DirectX 6 ?????

by David A. Ewin » Tue, 29 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Here's a weird one.  I got the golf game Links LS 1999 for Christmas.  It
installed DirectX 6.0.  GPL still works fine (I have a Diamond Monster 2
Voodoo II card with 2.53 glide/DX5 drivers).  However, after playing the
golf game, my menus in Windows get whacked out.  A lot of the text is
missing (although you can see the underline character for the accelerator
key) until you put the mouse over that particular menu item.  A reboot fixes
it and Windows is fine until you play Links again.  I'm guessing that it
calls something in DirectX 6.0 that hoses the system slightly.  Note: I have
a Dell XPS 400 and the 2D graphics card is a Dell OEM version of the STB
nVidia ZX 8 MB.

Has anybody else seen this problem?
