with
GP2  F1RS Nascar2 GPL and finally Precision Cart Racing

I do not know if it is possible to used always the same setup so that I

Agreed, it is a really nice wheel; untouchable at the price, I'd say - and can
be made even better with a few simple mods.  The Logitech page for downloading
game definitions to use with the Profiler is:

http://www.logitech.com/us/support/wingles.html

Unfortunately, as of 12/14/98, none of the above games have LES definitions
yet.  Most of the definitions are for flight-oriented games as well, which is
probably understandable since Logitech have just now gotten into the wheel
business.  You can create your own games definitions in the Profiler, though.
It's pretty easy, but not always necessary.  In GPL, all the setups can be done
within the game, as it already allows you the use of all your buttons.  While I
haven't tried mapping keystrokes for Nascar, I found it didn't work in ICR2.
It set up ok, but didn't have any effect in the game, which I run in a DOS
window.  You don't need a special setup for GP2 either, except that you need to
set the pedals on combined axis before running the game.  GP2 supports separate
axis pedals, but I haven't gotten the Wingman to work that way yet.  Logitech's
tech support haven't responded to my email on the above problems so far, so
they may yet have something to offer.  I'll post it to this thread if so.

Cheers,

Steve,

I spoke to Tom (the logitechdriver software engineer) and we dicussed
the spereate axis problem.  As you mention, the WFF works great on GPL
but fails to support seperate axis on things like GP2, Motorhead, and
Powerslide.

The problem is the driver assigment of axis.  The decision was made
(based on Microsoft's wheel axis assignments) to use X, Z and R for
steering, accel, and brake controls respectively.  Many sims want to
see X, Yand Z instead and thus never even see the WFF's brake.

Logitech is looking at solutions but until a patch to the drivers or
the sims is released I would suspect that combined accel and brake is
all that will work.

Hope this helps.

Maybe e-mail to logitech tech support indicating that folks want the
ability to set the axis mapping and maybe they will put it in. (I
would not suspect tech support has any idea about the underlying axis
mapping problem though, so asking them about may come up empty)

I actually want to see it, and the combined or seperate axis check
box, moved to the profiler to make it a per game selection vice an
overall selection.

One more thing.  Overall the logitech wheel is awesome.  The pedals
have a light spring and the pedals must be combined in some games, but
other than these rether minor gripes the package, in my opinion, is
the best out there for the money.

Geoff Stahl

Geoff, thanks for your comments. About the pedals, which seems to be the
major gripe about this wheel, I think I read that someone had replaced the
springs with stronger ones. Didn't pay much attn at the time but am now very
interested in this wheel. Would you, or the person who wrote that post, be
able to tell me if this is difficult, ie are the springs used common so that
stronger ones would be easily obtainable? Thxs.

Should crematoriums give discounts for burn victims?
If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?
If most car accidents occur within five miles of home, why doesn't
everyone just move 10 miles away?
Atheism is a nonprophet organization.

I've replaced the brake spring only in my Logitech pedals, it is very easy to
do, there are about 7 screws on the bottom of the pedal housing to take off.
The springs themselves are just common coils available at any well stocked
hardware store (Home Depot Part Number SP 9713). You will have to cut them to
the length you need.

I tried replacing my throttle spring as well but found it too stiff, instead I
combined the old brake spring with the throttle spring which gives the throttle
a smoother, more  progressive feel.

Hope this helps,

-don

You might also want to check on http://www.force-1.com in the discussion
group. There is (was?) a thread going on called "Improve the Logitech
Formula Force Pedals", started on 12/12/98, where a lot of people give their
experiences with spring tweaking. don was one of them :-)

I've been patching together a review of the non-FF Wingman Formula wheel, which
I'll post if I ever finish it.  To preview;  it has no current comp at the
price point, and can be improved even more with a few simple & cheap tweaks.
If you're in the market for a sub-$100 non-FF wheel, look no further.

All,

The are new 3.12 (release candidate) drivers that work for all
logitech products.

The fixes include:
- Improved Envelope handling; Colin McRae Rally works now
- Force Settings sliders are persistent across reboots
- Self-Autocalibration of WingMan Formula Force wheel - no more
initalization issues, no more tilting to the left!
- Improved axis handling, no more dead brakes or not moving axes
- Fixed bug in LUsbSys (crash when suspending some machines)

Thus the seperate axis brakes should now work, though I have not tried
it yet.  They are available at:

http://www.wingmanteam.com/

Be advised, these are the 3.12 CANDIDATE drivers and should be pretty
stable, but look for the final ones (after  QA) on the regular
logitech site.

The guys at logitech are constantly fixing minor bugs and annoyances,
this says a lot about their product.  Ever one of my little gripes has
been address and I have only had the thing two weeks. Even the spring
issue is going to be brought up to managment to see if any changes can
be made (no promises there, but the homebrew fix is pretty simple).

Later,

Geoff

This was on f1racingsim.com's forum  (http://www.f1racingsim.com/forum.htm) and
the title was "BEEFING UP the Logitech pedals...here's how."  The original
author was a guy named HILLY100.

------------Quoted text-----------------
I have just changed the springs in the pedals and it is a HUGE improvement.
I used some watertap springs that I had lying around in garage; you know the
springs that are behind the plastic wall taps(eg. shower, bath...etc). They are
perfect because they are firm and slightly larger in diameter than the originals
but taper just at the end which fit the lobes exactly. I have 3 on the brake and
1
on the accelerator. To get 3 springs on the one pedal is just a matter of
screwing one on top of the other...a bit like tangling up a slinky :)
The pedal travel seams to be the same but the tension is REALLY, REALLY firm
which allows for greater overall accuracy.
A good tip is to hold the pedal unit upsidedown on your lap when you do it. The
spings are so firm that you'll have to pull the pedal down with one hand to
stop the pots from popping out of the plastic footings at the same time as
relocating the springs with the base...It's a bit of a struggle but worth it!
So head on down to your local Hardware/Pumbing supplier and get em!

I read on the force-1.com forum that you can get the springs easily enough from
Home Despot (errr... Depot) - He recommended "Handyman Springs" model #
SP-9713.  He had to cut them in half because they were too long, but they work
great for him.

Hope that helps,

-Chris
