Hi all,

Has anybody successfully got this wheel (the gameport version) working
in Win XP yet? Just tried to set it up and although it is recognized
in the game controllers applet when I click properties to test it I
get the dialogue box up telling me it is not connected.

Any ideas??

TIA

According to Microsoft the gameport version is supported by XP. MY USB
version isn't though and it works in XP, although I can't use the profiling
software to set it to split axis. Better look in the Knowledge base at
http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp?fr=0&SD=GN&LN=EN-US

Curious.  It works fine here.

Are there problems with your sound drivers?

No the sound drivers work fine.

I have managed to get the wheel to work once so far, it just suddenly
showed as OK and I was able to do the test and then run F1 2001 for a
while without a problem. But then I left it for a while and when I
went back to it it was showing as 'Not Connected' again.

Sorry to say this, buit intermittant faults are the hardest to pin
down.  I'm stumped as to what the problem could be, unless it's a
cable problem.

To clarify...

The USB works fine IF you have the 4.0 software.  It will put up a complaint
box during installation, but it still works fine.

The Gameport is KIND of compatible.  It works only with the built-in XP
mini-driver for SideWinder controllers.  The 3.02 SideWinder Software, the
latest (and apparantly, last) version for Gameport controllers, will not in
any way, shape or form install under XP or 2K.

The 4.0 software is not downloadable, and only works with USB SideWinders
anyway.

Therefore, Gameport versions of the controllers will never have Profile
support.  No buttons adjustments, no axis adjustment, no force adjustments,
no nothing.

It basically acts like a 4 axis joystick.

Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves for this.

Not exactly. Proper games like GPL and N4 disables the return to
center force, and puts force feedback in it. And it defaults on
separate axis, which means F1 2001 is undrivable on Win2K.

Indeed!

Well, it installs, but if I set it to use split axis it doens't give me that
option in F12001 so I don't think the v4.0 profiling software is wroking
properly under XP. I bought the MS FF2 joystick and it has v4.0 profiling
software too and installs with no complaint under XP and all the options
work. Not the MS FF usb wheel though.

Yep, I emailed them and reamed them out for it. They probably never fix it.

That wasn't really my point, but you are correct :)

F1-2001 has problems with XP OTHER than with the MSFFW.

Frankly, it feels like an un-finished game to me.  The controller code is
wacko, and no force-feedback?  These days?

The graphics performance under XP is also shakey.  Sometimes it's fast,
sometimes it slows to Matrix-like speeds.

I'm hoping for HUGE improvements with the patch, if it ever ships.  If not,
this is my last EA title.

Funny, that's the conclusion I came to when NFS3 wouldn't run due to
its copy pretection, and EA tech support told me I had to make a copy
of the CD and put it in my CDR to get round the problem.  That was
years ago.

Oh, when will I ever learn?
