I am wondering if the Papyrus sims (GPL and NASCAR 3) are fillrate limited,
meaning if a video card comes out that can purduce a very high fillrate will
the game run faster? I remember when I upgraded form a single voodoo2 to a
SLI config and saw no improvements in FPS in GPL. I guess I am also asking
does SLI with voodoos increase your fillrate?

Thanks,

I guess what I really want to know is if someone is not getting 36 FPS in
GPL now will the new batch of video cards (V4/5 and NV 15) help in
framerate? I currently run a celeron 366 OC to 550 and have a Voodoo 3 3000
OC to 175 and I still can't get a solid 30 FPS on NASCAR3 (at TALA
backstrech) or 36 FPS on GPL ( at start) with almost all details on. Will
the new cards help?

The Papyrus game engines are normally limited in FPS due to the
synchronisation it has to do between the game engine itself and how it
refreshes the graphics on the screen.  GPL is locked up at the maximum of
36fps, while Nascar Racing 3 is locked at 30fps.

In the future, the only thing video cards will do is be able to run higher
resolutions for GPL.  You will be at constant 36fps, yet have higher
resolutions.  Most of us are still pretty happy with 36fps.  It's smooth,
not extra smooth (I would had preferred a 72fps limit), but well enough I
would say ;)

sounds like not.  the lower fps at the start is cpu usage mostly.

All games are fillrate limited at higher resolutions. But if you
aren't getting 36fps at lower resolution (640x480) in GPL or 30fps in
N3 then the fillrate isn't the bottleneck on your system.

The processor would then be the bottleneck, so adding another Voodoo
for SLI (which does increase fillrate) or a faster Voodoo won't give
you much improvement.

If the processor is the bottleneck you can either upgrade to a faster
one or off-load some of the tasks, the GeForce card off-loads much of
the graphics work to its own processor. You might also consider
getting an SB Live sound card which uses very little processor and has
a digital gameport.

If you do get max framerates at lower resolutions, but drop off when
you go to higher resolutions, then fillrate is the bottleneck. The new
Voodoo 4 and 5 cards will get you back to a solid 36/30 in that
situation.

Hello !

I am useing an Athlon 500 overclocked to 840Mhz, and it makes GPL fly on my
V3 (190Mhz).
Now i can run in 1024, and i get 36fps even at the starts, whit full field,
at Monaco ;-)

For even higher resolutions...you may need a 3d card, whit even higher
fillrate...but for now, i am VERY happy !
