NFS HS crashes on Win98 SE

Need for Speed High Stakes worked fine on my PC (Dell Dimension XPS,
Pentium II 333, Diamond Monster 3DII SLI, 128MB RAM, Turtle Beach
Montego A3D sound card) under Windows 98. After I installed the Win 98
Second Edition Updates (the $20 CD) NFS hangs after the opening movie.
It does this regardless of whether I allow the movie to finish or I hit
Esc.

I've tried all the suggestions from EA's support page with no joy. I've
reinstalled NFS, patched it using the auto-patcher, and I've also had
to format my hard drive and reinstall Win98 (then SE). I had to do this
because after one NFS hang my C:\Windows directory was hosed.

Anybody out there using NFS HS on Win98 SE?
