Yellow Flag = Caution.  You are approaching an accident.  The green flag
will be shown when the situation has cleared.

Blue = There is a faster moving vehicle behind you.  In Practice, this
will occur whenever there is a car close behind you.  If you are not on
a hot lap, you should yield to this car.  In a race, this will only be
shown if the car behind you is about to lap you.  You should let the car
by.  There is no penalty for ignoring this in the game, but it is
considered very bad manners to do so, particularly when racing online.

White = There is a very slow vehicle on the track ahead.  This will come
out when a disabled car tries to limp back to the pits.

Hi GPL racers,

I've been watching some videotapes (of old films) from the period,
and they seem to have used the national flags for starting the race.

In GPL that is not the case. Does somebody know, why Papy was not
realistic in this (tiny!) matter? And perhaps somebody is making
a patch? ;)

They probably couldn't get a license to use the countries' flags
likenesses.  I think they got the green flag just in the nick of time.
Sega wanted exclusive rights to the color.

I hear sega got it for 1999 but they are going to put different colors on it
to make it unrecognizable and hold the license for the next 10 years so no
other games will be able to use it.

Yellow, waved = incident on the track.
Yellow, held = incident off-track or off the racing line

Well, the national flag of the host nation was certainly the signal used
to start the race back then.  Perhaps the extra work required to have
eleven different starting sequences may have been too much, Arto.

I'm not 100% sure, but I guess it's not possible to get the exclusive
rights on the use of national flaggs.
Should be another reason.

all.

Certainly, but one has come to learn that sarcasm and international
newsgroups sometimes just don't blend very well!
