GPL: flags - blue supercedes yellow??!?

GPL: flags - blue supercedes yellow??!?

by Doug Olse » Thu, 01 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I was in the middle of qualifying for an AI race at Monza last night. I
exited Lesmo 2 poorly, and Jimmy Clark was closing rapidly. I started
powering around Ascari, and the corner worker showed me a blue flag,
indicating that I should let Clark past. Just as I started to let my car
drift wide for the exit, I zoomed past a stricken AI car tooling along the
outer edge of the curve, only missing it by a whisker! WTF??!? There was no
indication that there was trouble ahead, only the blue flag, which I figure
should've been a YELLOW one (assuming there can't be two flags shown
simultaneously, which is probably the case)!

Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?

Don't tell us GPL isn't perfect...the patch has not been reported to fix
these sorts of errors, so they can't exist!! :)

Marc.

I'm still new to GPL, but I am curious as to why I was given the blue
flag, indicating that I should let the car behind me pass, even though
I was a whole lap in front of him, and was in a faster car?

Thomas, refer to the info that I've just posted in the "GPL patch AI
question" thread regarding the use of the blue flag back in the GPL era.

Two things:
1.  Race GPL more often.  <g>
2.  Flags only exist in practice and the race.  You'll see flagmen all around
the racetrack.  They usually don't show flags unless there's someone behind
you, there's a wreck, or someone in front of you is really slow.

AFAIK, it's not possible to turn the flags off. There are no flags in
training sessions, but during qualifying and racing you should see:

green - at the start of a race, and sometimes a cornerworker or two further
down the track from a yellow
yellow(actually shows up as white for me, but that might just be my Voodoo1
passthrough cable talking)  - just before the location of a car which may be
obstructing the racing line (i.e. accident/breakdown)
blue - during qualifying when another car is close behind you, and during
racing if a car is close to lapping you
black - if you do something *** and end up being DQ'd -- try driving the
wrong way round the track to make this happen in a hurry (just don't do it
online)!
chequered - at the end of a qualifying session or race

During the cooldown lap of a qualifying session or race, the cornerworkers
will wave a variety of the above flags (except the black and chequered, I
think ??) to make sure you know that the session is over. For some reason,
the AI drivers still think it's 'game on', and race hell bent for leather
all the way back to the pits.

- and by waiting for the patch, you're really missing out on a great sim! I
say give it a go! You won't be disappointed!

Doug:
Yellow flag means "crash ahead", or "track is blocked".
White flag means "slow moving car ahead" (not "one lap to go" as in the
states).

Ciaooooooo! ;)

There is also a white flag, shown when there is a car going very slow
on the track

depends which flag was showing first, if it was showing blue, then needed to
show yellow, it would stay on blue, same in opposite situation.
