Frame rate is everything (F1C)

Guys,

I was struggling with F1C the other night, trying to get a decent qualifying
setup. I'd make changes, but the results were inconsistent.

I went back to the graphics settings, turned a lot of stuff off or down, and
got my frame rate into the late 40s (GF2, 2400+).

This made a huge difference to the way the car handles, I could drive more
consistently, and getting a good setup became much easier. Also, clipping
the curbs had a better effect. If I clipped them too hard, I'd still spin
out, but I could touch them without any nasties.

So, if you're struggling with F1C, make sure you've got a decent frame rate
first.

I'm thinking that 50 FPS is probably a good target.

PS. And it has nothing to do with what your eyes can see, it's down to how
often the controller is sampled.

Yes, If i turn on any level of AA or ansiotropic filtering, the controls
become seriously lagged

I understand that framerate is important so you can react quickly
enough to what you see to avoid spin outs and other accidents which
can be caused by low framerates, but please explain how framerate
affects how often the game controller is sampled.

I think you're right.

The controller is polled each frame.

50, huh?  I have some work to do.  I think I got about 35...

I think turning off "telemetry in race" in plr adds some fps in races

Is that standard with all games or just ISI's?

Go as low as you can, and drive.

Then gradually up things 'till it feels crap, and go back one.

Then if you're too low on the graphics, spend money ;-)

I'm not sure Dan, i'm pretty sure it's how I do it at the minute.  I was
doing it at the physics rate, but it was confusing a few controllers (Niels'
for example).  I may be doing it as a fraction of the physics rate at the
minute (around 60 times / sec).  I'll have to look at the code.

So in summary, I don't know ;)

Fortunately it's not standard.  Papyrus isn't.  Trust me, there's nothing
more frustrating in ISI' sims then to have very crude polled controllers
when the FPS go suddently down.  It always happens when you *most* need it,
critical situations.

But then again you can go the Crammond way and stretch reality ;-D
