F1C and frame rates

by Richard S Becket » Sat, 26 Jul 2003 18:01:07

Guys,

Since I put my new graphics card in, I've discovered that I get exactly the
same frame rates whether I use 640x480 16bit, or 1600x1200 32bit.

I have to reduce the graphics options quite a bit to get a reasonable 40-50
fps. I get no jerking, all seems very smooth, and the FF seems to be
performing well, despite the lowish FR.

I'm sure there are people out there getting much better FPS with the same
sort of kit, so I'm beginning to think there's something holding my system
back.

Can anyone give me some pointers on where to look?

Current system:
AMD 2400+
256 Mb memory (I think itc pc133 - is this the bottleneck?)
GF4 Ti 4200 128mb Turbo (Supposed to perform as well as a 4600).
Soltek SL75KAV mobo 4xAGP.
Using on board sound, and midi interface.
MSFF gameport.

Thanks.

R.

Both the size and the bandwidth of that memory would be a massive bottleneck
in your system, modern games need at least 512mb to run smoothly and the
memory bandwidth of your SDR will be *** your cpu.

Get yourself an Nforce 2 mobo and 512mb of DDR, or at very least another
stick of SDR.

Hmm, I think I read on some hardware site that going from SDRAM
to DDRAM only gains you 5-10% in performance... Might be a good
idea anyway because nowadays SDRAM is usually *more* expensive
than DDRAM of the same capacity.

cheers,

So you're not fillrate limited.

I wouldn't call 40-50fps 'lowish'. ;-)
So now you'd say you were CPU limited (transformations, culling, AI
etc)

Now you'd say the last line I wrote is rubbish; enough CPU power
there.

Then you shiver, and think of the communication protocol for these
wheels, thought of by MS (let's acknowledge every FF command we send
and forget about performance).
Try turning off FF, see if that improves framerate.

On board sound is a big CPU and memory resource eater.

A 25$ sound card will improve your FR by 3 or 4 fps to say the least.

I hope you were referring to the OP's mobo sound. There are some very
good onboard sound implementations, although they are in the minority.
