broken Logitech Force Wheel

by asdgs » Mon, 16 Sep 2002 08:43:16

I posted here about my LWFF a few weeks ago.  When turning right and
correcting by a light jerk to the left (eg. Lesmos at Monza), the
wheel downshifts.  It doesn't happen every lap.  However I can
replicate the problem in Logitech manager program in
configuration/calibrations.

One person thought that it was a pinched wire.  I thought it could be
a conflict in the system.  Therefore I reverted back to a Voodoo3-2000
for GPL since I know it works great in this computer.  I also removed
a couple of cards.

But still I get this problem.

I took the unit apart and took the wire out that runs from the main
board to the buttons in the wheel.  It looked fine.  Put it back
together.  But I still downshift occasionally.

Where can I find a listing of wires and where they go?

Any ideas?  I need help soon... my Lotus doesn't last long in a full
distance GP when it downshifts by mistake!!

PS this is the current selling Logitech FF wheel.

try this, it's a site by our own Jens Schumi about rebuilding the LWFF
with ball bearings..  It might have enough pictures and info to help.  Good
luck.

Check your downshfit button(the switch itself).  It's probably flaky.  I had
the same thing happen on my TSW2mod.  When I'd make a sharp left turn, it would
downshift.

One other thing... sometimes the shifters show up in GPL as KP+ / KP-.
Other times they show up as Button1 / Button2.  Why would this happen?

Maybe because the switch is activating while you're starting the program.  From
what others have said if you input a control during that time, GPL 'loses' your
wheel.  That's(kp+/kp-) just the default for shifting...

Uh, yeah - I knew that.  When the game loses its config for a wheel, it
defaults back to the keyboard controls(KP+/KP-).  I stand by my statement.

But if its set to KP+/KP-, the shifter buttons still work.  But the
keyboard +/- on the number pad do not work.

Whoa...that's weird.  What happens if you create another player?  See if it
remembers the controls then.

Your last sentence irritates me a bit, since this would  mean you own a Momo.
The problem is better known on the old red LWFF, which you find in bits and
pieces on my website.

I assume either your wiring (through steering shaft) or the shifter contacts are
flaky.
Take of the black plastic housing and pull out the plug to the Cirquit board
(grey wire). This disables all the buttons and shifters on the wheel.
Assign manual shifting to your keyboard and take a spin.
Problems gone?

If yes, the problem is with the wire or the shifters.

Now replug the thing and unplug under the wheels hub-cap.

Test again.

If problems again, then the wire is damaged. If not, the shifters/in-wheel-PCB
is flaky.
Before I type my ***off, try it out and let us share your experience.

PS:
forgot the easiest check:
remove the nut and washer under the hub cap. Could be that the washer gives an
erratic short-cirquit to the contacts underneath. If so, some office-tape for
better insulation will do the trick.
