GPL with PC Gamer: which version?

by Jonny Hodgso » Fri, 29 May 1998 04:00:00

Just got the latest PC Gamer with a GPL demo on it, now installed on my
housemate's computer (mine won't cope :(.

I seem to remember various things being mentioned about improved car
setups and suchlike.  How up-to-date is this version?  It gives me a
choice of three cars (and three power classes) at Watkins Glen in practice
only, and has no pits/car setup options.

The car's tricky to drive but not what I'd call evil, and it's *hugely*
rewarding when you start to get it right - I love this game!  I'm not sure
I could _race_  it yet, though...

Sorry to ask for repeats, but what sort of laptimes have people been
managing with this demo, too?  I can run consistently under 1:15 with the
Lotus after something like 100 laps.

Is it my imagination or do the cars handle differently?  The Eagle seems
to put power down better but be a little too stable for my liking, whilst
the Brabham feels the most nervous but has less power to upset it.

Drove 27 laps this morning and only fell off seven times!!!

Yes this is the same alpha version we all have.  Yours in only not
compressed.

There is some people who can run sub-1:10 laps for like 50laps... :-((

Yes the 3 cars have a different feeling.  The Lotus is the most nervous, but
with great power.  The Eagle has the less power, but turns better.  The
Brabham is right in the middle of the 2 others AFAIK.

These are planned for the full release, this is *ONLY* an alpha demo!!!

Last time I looked, the internet record was just under 1:07
seconds (around 1:06:85 IIRC?) Try another 100 laps then see how you are
doing, BTW, my quickest so far after, erm? I reckon around 500 laps is
1:09:95 in the Lotus GP1. God knows how those quick guys manage 1:07's

Correct, they are all different, the Lotus is quickest but hardest to
master? The Eagle is quick and stable, and the Brabham comes in last,
but is great for learning how these babies handle, you can really throw
it around hard and it will stay with you.

Try the Brabham GP3 car and really throw it around, you can get it to
*really* slide, but still keep it on the track.

I partly agree :-)

Don't forget, Brabham won the driver(Hulme) and constructors championship in
'67 thru consistancy (over the more powerful cars due to their unreliability,
including the Lotus type 49)
Just to note: I've completed 50+ laps with an average lap time of 1:09.33 and
my best lap was 1:08.02.
Whoever, the average lap time at the 'Glen in the '67 race was in the 1:08's by
Jim Clarke. So I've still got some way to go!

And through the way in which the Championship points were scored.

Well Peter,

In turn 4, 6/7 and 8 I can get it to slide, but I don't always stay on
track. There is not enough power to control the car with your right
foot.

This is a good point.  Does any one know if there is going to be random breakdowns?
