GPL-server with PC-Duo or PC-Anywhere?

by Martin Granbe » Tue, 09 May 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm trying to run a GPL server on an old computer. The computer will
not have a monitor, mouse or keyboard so I need to be able to
administer it with some kind of remote admin program.

I've tried installing PC-Duo client but as soon as I run GPL it
returns to the desktop. My guess is that PC-Duo overrides the video
driver in a way that GPL doesn't like. If I deactivate PC-Duo
everything is fine again.

My question is if anyone successfully has got GPL to run with a remote
admin program such as PC-Duo/PCAnywhere etc? If so, which program?

Cheers,

/Martin

Hi Martin,

WinVROC has a remote admin capability.  Now if this is for your local LAN
only, I'm not sure if it will work. (http://www.vroc.net)

This will work ...

I setup my P200 as the YouBeTheBoss server -- not using WinVROC but
changing the core.ini files to inform VROC when a race is up.  People
login using the boss password "/boss" and it works :-)

Try joining the YouBeTheBoss server via TCP/IP using the password "/boss"
and see for yourself how it works.  Just don't shutdown the machine
because all the boss commands work ;-)

Goto http://www.proracingclub.com choose the Grand Prix Legends graphic.
Then choose the YouBeTheBoss link.  There you will find the TCP/IP address
and details.  Contact me using the Webmaster link on the left frame if you
want my core.ini file.

Jason.

I'm checking with someone who runs N3, GPL, DTR, SCGT on a remote server for
what he uses...

Martin... on my servers for N3... I use a program called Remote
Administrator.  It is inexpensive (25.00) and is very simple to operate.

Hi Martin,

Try this out ... http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

It's FREE too :-)

AT&T's UK research labs distributes a free remote control utility called
VNC.  You may want to download it and give it a shot.  FWIW - I tried
remotly administering a GPL server with PCAnywhere 8 back in the v1.1 days
of GPL.  PCAnywhere didn't like it.  Any time I started GPL, I just got a
black screen in PCAnywhere.  Nothing ever froze, PCA just would not
display GPL.  The same behavior occured when I tried both the OpenGL and
software rendering modes.  My guess is that PCA8 did not like displaying
something in DirectDraw or Direct3D.  Anyway, give VNC a shot, it's free
after all.

I've run PCAnywhere - Version 8, I believe(it was a while ago).  It worked, but
slow.  One thing you have to do is make sure your video drivers are up to date.
I've seen the remote control programs have issues with that...
I've been told about a program called VNC - Virtual Network Connection.  I
haven't tried it yet, so I can't really comment on that.  But, the person who
recommended it says it works great...
