Help, GTR 2002 is Eating My Computer!

Hi Experts:

I did a full install of F1-2002 a couple of
weeks ago, and added that two part carset, base
and extended, where the car's paint is supposed to
change from race to race.

That worked great and the F1 side has been cool.

Last weekend I downloaded a bunch of GTR-2002
files from Blackhole and last night I ran the file
from Blackhole that had a name like "final release".
This was the install file.

The sim seemed to install fine, I found the
GTR 2002 startup file in the F1 2002 directory
and fired that baby up.

I got the cool opening graphics of Porsches,
Vipers and Lamborginis.

When I got out of the opening movie I found
myself in a screen where I was to enter my name.
The screen didn't seem to fit completely on my
display, and it was apparent that I was only
looking at part of the image.  The "Enter your
name" message was off the display on the right,
and no buttons were visible.  I had mouse
control of the cursor, and I could type into
the name field.  But the <enter> key yielded
only a ping sound, and I was unable to leave
that screen.  I couldn't escape or even
<CTL-ALT-DEL>.  So I had to hit the reset key.
The system came back up with that blue Scandisk
screen that warns of possible damage to the
files.

I tried again with the same results.

When friends came over for an evening of
online NFS/PU, that game would freeze shortly
after it started.  This also required a hard
reset and after that happened 3 times it was
apparent that GTR 2002 had not been playing
nice.  A full tape recovery from a January
backup turns out to be less entertaining on
a Friday night than racing NFS/PU online.

My desktop is at 1600x1200x32.  Because of
the high resolution I'm using large fonts.
F1-2002 was running fine at 1024x768x16.  I
haven't applied the no-CD patch.

A spin through Deja shows that GTR-2002
doesn't like my desktop settings.

Rather than finding a hint here and a tip
there in the 942 messages found on deja, could
someone point me at a comprehensive list of
things to do prior to starting my first GTR
race so I can avoid these problems?

My system is a P3/600 running WIN98 SE with
Voodoo 5 and a Santa Cruz sound card.  As
stated, F1-2002 runs fine.

                                      Thanks
                                      Larry

Perhaps your monitor wasn't correctly setup for the resolution that  the
game had changed to and all you needed to do, in order to see what was
required to be entered, was to adjust monitor via its own buttons.

Thanks Peter:

No, I adjusted the monitor to fit the image.

Its definitly your fonts . I had the same problem back in December and
posted the following mesage:

Just a heads up for those few of you that may have changed your font sizes
from their "normal" DPI setting to some custom setting. This *will* cause a
problem with the pre-game panel of GTR2002; the panel where you set your
player name and decide on number and class of opponents. In my case the
panel was displayed missing the right side and the bottom of the panel. Of
course the right side has half of the option setting buttons on it and the
bottom has all the exit and continue type buttons on it. The only way I
could exit the screen was by ctrl-alt-del. After days of messing around with
options, video card drivers, reinstalling F1-2002 several times and
downloading GTR 3 times (thank heavens for cable :) ) , I finally picked up
a clue on the simbim forums. Reset my font DPI back to normal and now the
pre-game panel shows up as it was meant to.

Excellent game , BTW, well worth the effort it needed to get it to run

   < Snip >

Thanks Dave:

   It's definitely my fonts.

After a full system recovery from tape, I
changed the fonts to small, and made no other
changes, it works.

I'm jazzed.  Now I'm having problems getting
the patch to run.  I'll describe those in a new
thread if I don't find anything in Deja.

                                        Thanks
