I don't see any reason it *has* to end in despair and the death of
Papyrus. Papy existed and was a name in sims before Sierra/Vivendi,
if they're spun off that doesn't mean they're dead. Maybe they'll see
it as an opportunity to start fresh and show what thier tech can do
with some really exciting cars (the press release seems to lean in
this direction).
And I don't see why them moving into console development is
necessarily a bad thing, either. The big bucks generated by console
sales is just the kind of thing that could subsidize a pet project
like GPL2. And with the move to multiplayer on the consoles, no one
can deny that Papy has the best multiplayer racing tech out there
(although LFS looks like a nice breath of fresh air).
Add adjustable physics models (extra power/grip, reduced damage for
arcade modes), and why couldn't Papy make sims that appeal to arcade
*and* sim racers, on multiple platforms?
I'm actually really e***d to hear what they'll have next. As long
as it's GPL2, Rally, or CART ;).
