Hi guys, a friend of mine is having a hard time trying to pronouce
Osterreichring. Can someone post a phonetic of how to say it. In English
please, British or American will do ;) Of course Canadian might be
interesting too <G>

The Canadian pronounciation is easy...

Just put an "eh?" at the end of it.  "Osterreichring eh?"

Try oosterike, the ike part rhymes with the former American General
and President, as opposed to Nike.

Osterreichring Pronounciation?

This is what the CMU online dictionary came up with:

OW1 S T ER0 AY0 K .

0 No stress
1 Primary stress

Well, glad to have that out of the way :-)

There is no such vowel as the O+umlaut in English (I think). Also the 'ch'
is pronounced as in Scottish 'loch' instead of the 'k' advised here.

For the other poster: Owsterayk means Austria in native language (German).
Ring is simply a closed circuit, as in Nurburg-ring (sorry, no umlauts in
Outlook).

1st of all, its '?sterreichring' with a german umlaut '?', i.e. a 'O'
with two points above of it and often written as 'oe' ... same with
'Nrburgring', where there is a german umlaut '', a 'u' with the same
stupid ... guess you get the point ;-)
the pronounciation of the ?/Oe is something like the 'i' in 'sir', the
'ster' sounds like 'stair', 'reich' like ... uhm ... well ... with a
'ch' like in the old greek 'xi' ;-) ... and 'ring' almost the same in
english. all 'r' are not rolled, but spoken with the tongue point down
(like a snarling dog ;-).

so, what next? "Rouen"? :-)

Well, since the O actually has an umlaut over it, I guess the phonetic
for English would be something like:

"Urr-ste-reich-ring"

and Rouen is pronounced

Pronunciation:
ERR-ster-eye-sh-ring.
(the "ch" is pronounced "sh" in Austria I believe)

Translation:
Austrian Ring
(or more literally "Eastern Kingdom Ring": ?sterreich is the German/Austrian
name for Austria, meaning Eastern Kingdom.)

First off, there should be umlauts (the two little dots) over the O.
Unfortunately, Noonan or whomever left these out. Osterreich means Austria
in German, which is the language of Austria.  The track is located in
Austria, hence the name.  It more or less means "Austria Circuit".

It is pronounced - Ooster Rike Ring.

"Oz-trike-ring".
