WooHOO! 1st win against GPL ai...!

During a championship season at Monza(novice).  I worked on braking early and
shifting late(thanks Chuck!).  Actually qualified on the pole.  I had my normal
bad start and dropped back to 3rd.  I passed Hill on the run to Curva Grande,
and caught Clark in Ascari on the second lap.  Once I told myself to just drive
and not worry about Clark in my mirrors, I was ok.  I actually won by about 9
seconds...  Ok, so the AI was 'un-hyped', but ask me if I care!<g>
Unfortunately, the game had the final laugh - it didn't show the paper!!!  So
even though I won, I don't have the proof or satisfaction of seeing my name in
'print'...<augh!>
:::walks away muttering to himself:::

Eldred
p.s. I lowered my PB from 1:30.61 to 1:30.50.  Not much, but...

Eldred,

I've been following your attempts to get half-way decent at GPL for a long
time now..I couldn't be more pleased for you that you finally managed it!
You always add some much needed humour to this site with your messages (I
presume you must have been driving in the same light-hearted manner!).

Seasons greetings to you, my friend, and to most of you reading this.

What does this mean? What do the hype and hype scale settings actually do?

Hype is reponsible for the AI (Artificial Intelligence of the computer cars)
driving  improvement. As you get better the AI gets better so that it  is
extremly difficult for us mere mortals to actually win against it. If you
race online and happen to get a super fast lap (had a 0.36 at Monza once)
due to connectivity troubles the AI becomes Superman. A little program
called AiTweak v1.03 written by Kari Ikonen allows you to set the AI at a
reasonable level and freeze it there. The computer cars are still a
challenge at any level though since they exhibit a number of "interesting"
driving tendencies (Surteees! Arrrgh!)

Oh yeah here's a place (among many) where you can get it
http://gpl.gamestats.com/. The best 13 kb download ever! However make sure
you also get the vbrun300.dll file that is necessary to display AiTweak.

Well, we won't mention the next championship race at Watkins....<hoo boy...>

I got punted so much, I felt like I had "Wilson" painted on my gearbox...

Actually, I didn't use AiTweak.  I just made the player.sts file read-only.
The AI is still original, they just won't get any FASTER...

Well Eldred,

I think it's time to say goodbye to you now! You're now in the hall of fame
(leaving me behind swarving at Monza trying to find a way to get in that
damn 1.30 range..).
It's been nice racing at the same level with you.
goodbye..........................
