A few Osterreichring facts

1) Vittorio Brambilla won his only race there in 1975.  He promptly crashed
as he crossed the line:)

2) John Watson won his first GP there in 1976 driving a Penske.

3) Alan Jones won his first GP there in 1977 driving a Shadow, also their
first win, and if I am correct their last.

4) Ronnie Petersons last win was there in 1978.

5) Elio de Angelis won his first race at the Osterreichring in 1982 driving
a Lotus-Ford 0.0125 seconds ahead of Keke Rosberg in the Williams.

6) I also think Niki Lauda had his first F1 race there in 1971, he only
managed to win his home GP some 13 years later.

7) The 1987 race was restarted 3 times (Martin Brundle usually explains this
several times a season) and the race wans't held for another 10 years.

8) The GP went back to the same location in 1997, the Austrians managing to
completely #$%^ up a brilliant circuit!

No, from memory of watching or reading about those events at some point in
time.  The 82 race was a real thriller, Prost retired while leading with
about 3 laps to go and Rosberg who was behind De Angelis suddenly realised
he could win the race and drove out of his skin to finish a whisker behind
the Italian.

Just picking you up on point seven there Chris. Mansell won that 1987 race after
the chequed flag came out a lap late. This was also the same event where
Johansson hit a deer in qualifying... I bought the highlights video of this
particular GP from Duke videos :o)

And I was there to see it :)
Unfortunately during sunday warm-up Mark Donohue crashed heavily in the 1st
corner, right before our eyes. For us he seemed almost unhurt, when they
took off his helmet. And still he died the next day  :(

Also a marchal was killed.

That was F1 in the seventies...

All correct, Chris, except your last comment.  It wasn't the Austrians who
stuffed the circuit, it was the FIA and FOCA.

I was watching some program on Speedvision and they showed this
particular
crash. it was rather amusing - it was a really wet race and he'd just
managed to drive a brilliant race to win, so as he crossed the line he
took both hands off the wheel to start waving and celebrating, and of
course immediately lost control and smacked into the pit wall. :)

Don't know of any movies with David Essex in that weren't shitty. On a
par with his music really. :-)  Though, of course, the one you are
referring to I would imagine is Silver Dream Racer.

I can see the lamplight... shining through my window...

"Silver Dream Racer" - has to be in contention for the worst racing movie
ever!

The "racing" scenes before Essex's final firey demise have people rolling
on the floor in hysterics:-)

Well he was British and the champeen was (I think) Australian, but you're on
the right track.
Although how you could confuse David Essex for an Amereican is beyond me !!

We get it everything translated (lip-synchred, dubbed?) into German,
and when it's not a big Hollywood movie, the translation might be less
than excellent. My favourite is the movie "Plenty", which was called
"Meryl Streep is a demancipated woman" in German movie theaters.
I doubt anyone dared to buy a ticket.

Video releases often are changed to be even more interesting.
So it's quite possible that the translator of the script run out of
coffee and made an Austrian out of the Australian. Saves typing two
letters every time it occurs.
And when reading about David Essex, the translator probably thought:
isn't that a place in England? Certainly foggy all the time. Dull.
Let's call it Amarillo, Texas instead, and then we name the flick
"Rodeo Ridin' Ringo, the fastest son of a gun under the sun".

There was a documentary about Muhammad Ali on the TV recently, showing
Ali during a speech in the 60s, citing "Mary had a little lamb".
The translator obviously understood "lamp", and so the German audience
got tortured with a translation starting "Mary had a small light".
