NR99 under DOS slower than Win98?

by Mark Hanno » Tue, 10 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

Until recently I have been running Nascar99 under Win98 for
my weekly modem race.  As this has been multiplayer I have
been forced to use the DOS executable, and out of laziness
I have been running in a DOS box from Win98.  This has served
me well with a nice smooth framerate.

I recently (in connection with the GPL1.1 patch!) changed my
T2 for a LWFF.  The LWFF is very good with windows games, runs
fine for the NR99 windows exe but does not work with the dos
executable (it calibrates but constantly jumps to the right
when driving).  I thought of using my T2 under windows for
this but although the thrustmaster is still present in the
'Game Controllers' window it has status 'Not Connected' and
nothing I can do seems to get it working.

In frustration I dug out DOS sounddrivers, mousedrivers etc
and setup a clean dos boot to run NR99 under.  This works
fine and my T2 is useable, HOWEVER the framerate is noticebly
slower than running under Windows ... any ideas how I could
improve this?

My setup:
Celeron 300A (at 300MHz), 128MB, Orchid Righteous 3DII

Contents of Dosstart.bat
C:\LOGITECH\MOUSE\MOUSE.EXE
SET BLASTER=A220 I5  D1 T4
C:\YAMAHA\OPL3SAX\SETUPSA.EXE /S
LOADHIGH C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE

Contents of Nascar.bat
cd c:\sierra\nr1999
set FX_GLIDE_SWAPINTERVAL=0
set SSTV2_REFRESH_640x480=75
nr19993d.exe

Thanks for any tips,

Mark

1) Your T2 does not have to be setup to show that it is
connected in windows in order for it to work in NR99
DOS. This is true even if you run the game within a
DOS box. It just has to be setup enough for DOS to
detect the wheel.

2) I have NR99 DOS setup to detect DOS as necessary.

Thanks, I checked the 'Prevent MS-DOS programs from detecting
Windows' and now I can use the T2 from a DOS box under windows.

It would be nice if I could use my LWFF but I guess Nascar3 is
coming.

True. The logitech FF wheel does work with ICR2 (DOS)
though.
