NR2003 and WinXP: slower than Win98

by ZP » Sun, 06 Apr 2003 04:45:17

I've noticed that NR2003 installed on a WinXP system is slower in comparison
with Win98. Even with the same FPS, on XP, the game seems to proceed in
jerks (like if the monitor's refreshing rate were lowered).

The video board is an Albatron Ti4600 and the drivers are XP certified.

Nobody with the same troubles?

There's a lot of processes running in background on XP. Check this, for a
tweak guide on XP for a game machine:

Inside the game the refresh rate seems to be lower than the default (85 Hz,
Sony 19")

You most likely have vsync enabled and arent using a refresh rate fix utility.  On capable
equipment, adequate cpu, RAM etc.., with proper drivers, XP is every bit as fast as 98, and has been
shown that way by most people.  Check your settings and drivers, etc...

I've just used the utility fix but Nascar Racing refuses to accept the
resolution of 1600x1200. More precisely this resolution is not present in
the 3D configuration window of NR2003 as soon as I've run the fix.

ZP, this is a normal side effect when comparing W2k/XP to the 9x systems.
I've noticed it in the early days of XP as well. Displayed fps is the same,
but there is some jerkiness, perhaps especially visible in the more
off-center areas of the screen.

I guess some aren't diligent enough to detect this, but once a system gets
powerful enough, the effect will get reduced until it really becomes hard to
see, or even unnoticeable.

If you've made sure the usual settings are optimised both under 98 and XP,
you can perhaps improve the situation by eliminating as many unneeded
services as possible.

Here: http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm or
here: http://www.reger24.de/prozesse/backWeb.exe.html

you'll find information as to which process are vital for the system, or for
your particular environment, and which aren't. Take all the advice with a
grain of salt, however, and only disable processes you feel comfortable to
disable, disable only one at a time, and remember well what you did, to be
able to restore the system to the previous state if a problem arises.

However, the rights-checking and other low-level tasks in 2k/xp alone (and
the fact that Directx has to access all hardware in a different, less direct
way than under 9x) create an overhead in 2k/XP which doesn't exist in 9x,
and as they say, you can't have the pudding and eat it all.

[Cut]

Joachim,
finally I've reinstalled the latest drivers and now the 1600x1200 resolution
is there again, however with a max refresh rate of 72 Hz. Then I've chooosen

even a better situation in comparison to the previous 1600x1200 without
antialising.

However I'm planning an HW upgrade to get more FPS (CPU and RAM).

Tnanks to all for the helping!
