Nascar: AI Tire Wear????

by Kelby Richard Co » Sun, 31 Mar 1996 04:00:00

I was just wondering if anyone knows whether there will ever be a patch to
make the tires of the AI cars wear out like they do for our cars.  It makes
the sim completely unrealistic when you get about halfway between pit stops
because the human cars slow down and the AI cars continue at the same speed.
Is there any way that the guys at The Pits or anyone else for that matter
could write a patch to change this problem?  Is there anyway to change
the numbers in the track.txt files to influence AI tire wear?  Thanks in
advance for any responses.

I don't understand your problem. The AI does seem to represent tire wear
for the computer opponents. Maybe you should work on your car setup to
extend your tire wear. A setup that gives you the fastest lap times will
not last very long. I routinely stay out longer between pit stops than
the computer opponents.

I have noticed the AI opponent slowdowns at Atlanta, Bristle, and
Martinsville. These are my favorite tracks.

You can edit the TRK file and change the numbers in the SPDWY line. I
haven't tried it but I have read that they represent when the AI cars
will pit.

This is kind of a different idea, but I really think hooking up an
exercise bike to control the throttle of a racing simulator would be a
great way to have fun and exercise.  Basically, how fast you pedaled would
determine what percentage of throttle input you gave to the car.  It would
have to be adjustable so as not to be too strenuous.  After all, I
wouldn't want to read about computer racing simulator types dropping dead
of massive coronaries as they attempted to squeeze out just a few more
revs down the front straight.  I can't think of a better incentive to
exercise for those of us ***ed to our favorite racing sim.

Would/can anyone investigate the design of such a system?

The quick and dirty way to handle this is modify the AI's pit window in
the track.txt file.  Make them pit when you usually have to for tires.

My roomate and I have been running a season over the modem, and we've found
that in the longer races, we end up having the advantage, because our car
setups, combined with on the fly pit decisions, (what to get, whether to pit),
will pay off against the AI cars. Nayway, point is we manage just fine.

This is not to negate the fact that AI cars don't seem to suffer the effects as
much as our cars, I mean when's the last time you ever saw an AI car break loos
because of tire wear.

Excellent idea.

By the way, the way my newsreader organized your post, it looks
like a followup post to one about AI tire wear in NASCAR.

Maybe that is your point, you would run the tires off the
exercise bike :-).

Hi Mike,

I race NASCAR in the IVL series where the races are 100%.   This means
that some races can take 4 hours.   Do you really want to pedal for 4
hours?   "Gasp Gasp I can't wait for a yellow flag ... Gasp Gasp".

Cheers,

Craig.
