Bell Atlantic DSL and GPL multiplayer

Hello,
I recently got Bell Atlantic's ADSL service in MD. I have a win98SE box
running Internet Connection Sharing. When running on a box behind the proxy
server I can join races but not host them due to my internal IP address
(192.168.x.x). Last nite I decided to install GPL on the server and see if I
could host a race from there. Even hosting on the server I could not access
my race I had set up through another dial up ISP, it would seem that I could
get no ping response from the 3rd hop (1st hop is DSL modem, 2nd hop is my
IP, 3rd hop is getting killed, no ping response) this has been the norm for
a week. It seems like the 3rd hop is some sort of NAT or firewall device,
for whatever reason, it is the reason I cannot host. Has anyone gotten BA
DSL with PPPoE to work properly hosting in GPL?

Thanks,
Brian Fox

Not sure about Microsoft's built in Internet Sharing Connection, but I am
doing the same
thing using cable modem and Sygate software. Before Sygate, I tried the same
with a Linux router using ip forewarding. The problem seems to be that GPL
uses
udp for the transport and ip forwarding doesn't let udp packets back across
the
interfaces. .(It does work with current kernels and ipchains, but I don't
have time
to rebuild now. Got to play GPL!!!)
One way to test is to do a ping to an internet site from both machines.
If MS ISC doesn't let udp across, you will get a response when on the
gateway machine,
but not when on  a machine using the gatewayMicrosoft's ISC may be failing
for the same reason,
while Sygate may have addressed
the problem. I am not sure, but it works perfectly. When I asked the similar
question, some
kind soul, (lost his name, but thanks again!) pointed me to the VROC     web
site and
it's there that I found out about Sygate. It's $39 after a 30 day trial
period. It's a breeze to
setup, and you'll know in 10 minutes if that was your problem.
VROC also has some settings that are needed to host, but out of the box it
worked
for joining.

Good Luck,

Tom R.
